Mobile Website Design Flyer Advice

Hey, I have recently been working on a flyer for my upcoming offline business venture of mobile marketing, and have designed a professional flyer to be handing out to businesses, and just wanted to know, what kind of information should be on there to convince a business owner to respond. I have also added a price tag of £300 on there, and want to know whether to leave that on there, or to remove it.

Any advice would be great!

Have you had success with handing flyers to business owners before? The only problem with flyers is that they are easy to throw away. Also a business owner may not take you seriously if you put a flyer in their hand.

I did something similar but I mailed and handed out "white papers" and/or reports. It makes a much bigger impact and is far more professional. After it worked so well for me, I created a package for acquiring prospects. It worked for me and many others.

You could also write a "white paper" on your own. Just include some information about the growth of the mobile device user base, the importance of mobile marketing to business and compile some statistics that prove mobile users are accessing businesses in record numbers.

If you do decide to go with the flyers, I recommend you remove the price and add a "Free 15 Consultation" in place of pricing. This will add some value to the flyer and make a little more difficult to toss into the "round file".

Also add some "fear of loss" in your headline...

"Your Competitor Knows About This - Do You?"

Something like that. Then add some benefit-rich bullet points.

The last time I tried flyers was in 1998. I was prospecting for web development clients. It did not work too well for me at that time. Things started popping when I created and printed up some reports that illustrated how quickly the World Wide Web was growing.

Times may have changed and you will never know until you try your "flyer campaign". However, why not start with the more proven and effective method of handing out imformative reports - then try a few flyer campaigns after you have some revenue in the coffers.

Best of luck to You Hassan.

Thanks for the reply, those are some good points that I do need to take into consideration, the reason I created a flyer was because I heard how successful postcard marketing is, and thought it would be similar, I am planning to distribute these to business owners by myself in my local area, so that I can explain a little bit about it to them as well, just adds a little preparation and some visual for the business owner to open up and consider.

These reports that you are on about sound like a fantastic idea, and I would definately like to take this option too, but with reports, how long should they be, I have all the information regarding mobile websites and usage of smartphones, and how its going to be big this year. Was planning to flyer businesses, and then make appointments, and then take these facts with me, and talk to the business owner casually, and see what we can do for their business.

I will definately take the price out of the flyer, and add in free 15 consultations, and add an element of fear of loss to it also.

Thanks for the tips, I will consider your ideas as well as the flyers to maximize my marketing efforts.

Hey brother sorry I can't pm you back, I need 50 Posts.
Just add a .com to the name.

From experience flyers are ineffective, I agree with the previous posts, biz see it as spam and will throw your hard work away.
Selling in person will save you slot of time and money, trust.

I'm also making a flyer, but not just to hand out like junk mail. My plan is to create a folder which contains my flyer, some SMS marketing statistics, maybe an article or two and a price sheet.

I'll be putting all that into a folder which I'll take with me on appointments. Then I'll leave it behind for the owner if he isn't sold right on the spot.

So I guess having a flyer or not all depends on what you'll be doing with it.

As for the price, I wouldn't put it on there.

Flyers alone seem to convert poorly (YMMV of course). A professional presentation folder with multiple pages inside in full color converts MUCH better IMO. Include an insert offering a significant discount with an expiration date to spur fast action ("Present this certificate to receive $100 off your first month's service. Act quickly, this offer expires Friday, April 22, 2011!").

Thanks for the replies everyone, sounds like flyers are a bad idea! lol...I was considering postcard marketing, with follow up calls, but then decided, why not try a flyer instead, with valuable information, and then follow up with a call, or a meeting with the owner. However I like the idea of having a presentation folder, with plenty of facts and information, and a flyer, plus charts and stats of all sorts. Would this way cost more to print and send to a load of businesses, or would it be better, to print off 20 of these reports, and go into a business and talk to the owner with the offer in hand, and just explain to them what the benefits are, while backing up my points with the information I have brought with me.

I am in the UK, so I thought I might give the flyer a shot, because I wanted to personally go in with a flyer, and talk to the business owner about my offer, and how I can help, and a small flyer will have some simple information on what the benefits are, and I can always explaiin in further detail, or arrange an appointment for another time, with more information.

I am just trying to get my first client on board, this is why I thought flyers could do it, and after the first client is signed up, I can expand and get more with the profits, just a matter of time, and what forms of marketing.

I did consider placing a special offer on there, such as a discount for a limited time period, and might still do this, backed up with stats and info on the flyer, this could urge a business owner to take action.

I am finally taking some action, and want to get success no matter what at the moment, will keep on grinding till I get those clients!

Any more tips and advice would be welcome!

A flyer is easily thrown in the trash, and has too much information for a casual contact, not enough information to close a sale. It just falls in the middle.

Yes, a presentation folder will cost more... but it will create an impression that is worth 100 times the cost. If a presentation folder with all the necessary docs inside costs you 6 pounds and a flyer costs you 50p, but 49 out of your 50 flyers ends up in the trash, what have you gained? How about if that presentation folder helps you close 7 or 8 sales out of that 50 prospects?

Don't go cheap on your first impression. Look cheap and you will be perceived as cheap, and in many cases you won't get a second chance to show that you're NOT cheap.

Hassan, I know you came looking for flyer advice/help.

Knowing WHO you are giving your marketing material to is more important than what's on it.

There is simple but powerful formula to get more money from your marketing, and that is...

RIGHT MESSAGE to RIGHT PERSON at RIGHT TIME.

Back to your question on what to put on your flyer...that comes from knowing WHO you are giving it to and the right time.

The timing is when the person is most likely to buy.

The right person is one that has a website and is spending money on advertising.

You will need to think deeper about these points to come up with your own profile as who the ideal client is.

Once done, you then, and only then, come up with what he/she wants to hear most.

Delivering that message may be better done using something else than flyers.

      Best,
      Ewen

I agree completely here. And wanted to add a few more points:

        1. Don't be shy getting in there and presenting yourself. But as mentioned already, do your homework. Know who your client is, know what they are - or more importantly- or not doing. Amplify the hurt - show them how they are missing out - especially if you know their competitor is one step ahead of them.

        2. Have several solutions handy. Maybe your goal of SMS marketing is not going over well....but maybe there's some other, unrelated area, you can help out with. Put your consultant hat on and show the business owner, your mission is to help them out......not drain their wallet.

        3. Avoid flyers at all costs. It's nothing but a drain in your own wallet. The whitepaper idea can work, but honestly - if you cannot present yourself as the expert to the business owner through mere casual conversation, everything else you have in your arsenal is devalued considerably. Being knowledgeable and answering all questions openly and matter-of-factly will boost your confidence, which the client will notice - this will earn you more sales.

Best of luck out there.....don't let this intimidate you in the least. Just make sure you are fully prepared.

        Cheers,
        Brian

Thanks for the tips everyone...appreciate it so much!

Sorry about the latre reply, the timezone from the UK to the US is different lol.

I have taken note of everything everyone has mentioned here, and will definately be going through with the whitepaper method with a file in hand, I will gather facts and info, and a flyer, and attach it all together, and make 50 copies, I will then go around to local businesses, and make conversation first, find out how business is doing, and what they are looking for to improve this, and then I will tell them about what I do, and how I can offer my help to increase business, without anything salesly at all.

I will mention to them, I am going around helping the businesses I like the most in each sector, for e.g. Restaurants, I will do one of each, such as Indian, Italian, Mexican etc, and also tell them how much I love their food, and how much I want to help spread the word about their food by marketing, and how I can make their marketing efforts better for them, at a better price to what they are paying currently, and then show them the stats and facts, and just explain to them, how it can really benefit them.

Thanks for the tips, it has got me thinking, and got the creative ideas flowing in my head lol...If flyers are a bad idea...what form of direct marketing works then for this type of business? I was considering sending out letters with the fact sheet, and a free consultation to discuss their needs, but not sure how effective that would be.

I am also looking to outsource an appointment setter, because I know I can seal the deal, ifI have appointments there, the research has been done, and I have learned as much as I possibly could about mobile marketing, and know I can sell this, just need the appointments! Where can I find decent appointment setters at a good price to be setting up appointments for me, while I go an make my own appointments too!

    Kind Regards to everyone!

      I'm sorry....everytime I read the following I wonder HOW this got started. It sure wasn't by someone who's actually "Sold" anything. What I'm referring to is the following;

"I will then go around to local businesses, and make conversation first, find out how business is doing, and what they are looking for to improve this, and then I will tell them about what I do, and how I can offer my help to increase business, without anything salesly at all!"

"Make conversation?" Hey!....these are BUSINESS people BUSY running their business! If you "saunter in" and "make conversation", they'll either think you are "Casing the Joint" or, a "someone who's just been thrown out of his home, looking for "companionship"!

Yikes! When I first read this from Cavanaugh....I could NOT believe how many people have picked up on that!

I go in....ask for the "Boss"....(I don't even give my name! He could care less what my name is)....tell him what I'm doing...open my Pitch Book and start Pitching. If he asks a question or shows interest...I continue.

Thankfully....MOST are interested. I then get to the point where they ask, "How Much?" THAT'S when I go into my "Dog and Pony" show! He is half way there. I then go on to Close him.

Also....one of your countrymen, Jamie Garside, has written 2 or 3 reports on "Renting" websites. You might do a search to take a look at them. Good stuff on calling on businesses.

      Don Alm

P.S. You might also consider one of the ways Jamie "Sells". Get a "Keyword Domain" (BirminghamPlumber)....make a ONE-Page site then email 10 or 15 plumbers in that area...telling them that "This Site is For Rent". First one who wants it, Gets it!"

  • Yeah I think flyers are not really the best way to market a product offline, I would suggest maybe a small but professional looking business card, call into see the business owner personally and speak with them, give them a business card and maybe a professional white paper, report or some sort of professional looking package which explains what your product/business venture can do for them.

I think you will get a better response this way.

    Best of luck to you!
