Google Maps Post Card Verification?!

I was trying to set up a Google Maps listing for a client today and I went through to the confirmation screen and under verification options it only had mail post card listed instead of confriming via phone or sms. Is anyone else experiencing this? I do not want to wait 2-3 weeks to get a post card in the mail to start my clients Google Maps listing.

I've been reading several posts here lately that the postcard is pretty much the norm in most areas now...

The last 2 places listings I have had to verify were with a postcard.

Here in Illinois, it still seems to be that the phone verification is available if the business already has an existing (but unclaimed) places page. If you are establishing a new place page, or they are changing their phone number/address, then it's the postcard verification.

It seems that the postcard normally shows up in 7-10 days.

Its hit or miss. I still get phone verification occasionally, but most are by mail. Plus the ones done by phone all end up needing mail verification later.

I've noticed if the account has been claimed already I will sometimes get a phone verification option after updating, but for new accounts it's a postcards from my experience. I've gotten them back in as little as 7 days. The key is to tell the customer to make a note on their calendar and address it to someone that gets the mail.

I had a customer throw it away thinking it was junk mail.

Here (Netherlands) you get the postcard option only if you have no placement in Google Places at all, if they have indexed you, you can still do it with a text message.
