Google Places & listing in other cities -- possible?

Hypothetical question... let's say that you have an event facility 30 minutes away from Las Vegas. We'll call it "Maximus". People that go there are blown away by what is offered and swear up and down that it's better than anything Vegas offers. Yet when people Google "event facility in Vegas", of course, Maximus is nowhere to be found... only the major players in Vegas dominate that first page.

Maximus shows up on page one for it's own small town, but they sure would like to tap some of that Vegas action. Unfairly, some of the Vegas event centers show up in the small town listings as well, above Maximus, on page one.

So it's obviously not a question of algorythms not allowing it... what is it? What would it take?

I know it's possible for Maximus to climb to the top of page one for it's own town, but is it possible to get on the first page for the "Vegas" search, too? Or is that pretty much impossible?

    Hello Jaxon,

Actually, theoretically it IS possible to rank on page 1 for "event facility Las Vegas". However, it will take time and a lot of effort. I just checked and there are 4 out of 7 facilities that it will take you years to move out of their places, but the others don't seem that strong. Unfortunately, all are pretty close to the city center. Left that aside, you will need a decent number of citations and reviews, as well as optimization of your website for local search.

I'd rather target first the small town, and then step forward and try to rank somewhere for Vegas. If you want, write me a PM if you don't want to publicly provide information for this hypothetical place and I would try to give you more concrete advice.
