My mother's lawyer asked me to come in and tell him what he could do to get more website traffic. He knew I had multiple websites and knew about this stuff. I did this as a favor and spent about an hour with him.

Apparently he pays about $100 for an SEO company that does nothing but collect the money.

Well he was so impressed with my knowledge and suggestions that he wants to hire me. I never really considered doing this for anyone other than for my own sites because Idon't know if I want to work with people, but there seems to be a real need for it.

I had the same thing happen when I gave some advice at a local entrepreneurs meeting.

So I'm playing with the idea of maybe offering my services on a limited basis.

Sooo, I'm wondering for those of you who offer local SEO services, how do you charge? Do you send am invoice?

How do you charge for services? Monthly, or per service?

Charge monthly. As far as how much, what is your time worth to you? What is a new client worth to the lawyer?

Here's what I look at before submitting a bid:

    • Number of face to face meetings per month.
    • Can I do all of this from home?
    • Can I out-source any of this (we all need a vacation now & then!)?
    • How many hours per month will I spend on this project?
    • What hourly rate do I want to earn?
    • Return on investment (ROI) for client.
Let's say, for this example, that you want to make $75 per hour for your services. You've determined that you will need to spend three (3) hours per week on SEO for your new client.

    3X75=$225 per week
    225X52 (weeks per year) = $11,700
11,700/12 (months per year) = $975 per month.

I'd wager that the lawyer needs one extra client per month to justify hiring you to take care of his SEO. Educate him on the fact that proper SEO takes time before he'll start to see significant results, and ask for a minimum six month contract. Lawyers in general are pretty busy people, I'll bet that you could start by asking for a 1 year contract and get it.

Get 4 other clients in this monthly price range and you're doing alright. Get a total of ten clients in this price range and you're making a nice six-figure income and working less than 40 hours per week.

    Good luck,

    Will

Start small and get comfortable. They charged $100 for nothing...start off with $200, throw in a bonus, get someone under your belt and slowly build a "proof portfolio" to show others and go on from there.

      Thanks Will, great advice!

And thanks Jim for your advice too! I like the idea of starting small to build a portfolio (and experience).
