Riding on the coatails of Groupon idea

Here's an idea I came up with a few days ago and I though I'd share it to see what you all think.

I'm signed up with Groupon with both my email and Android so I see new ads every day.

My idea is to write down the restaurants who advertise with Groupon, call them, and tell them that I have a marketing strategy that will allow them to take advantage of all those people coming in with the Groupon coupons.

The idea (although not groundbreaking) is to set them up with an SMS service or email opt-in campaign and create a coupon (on paper) that gives customers another smaller discount on their next visit when they sign up. Have these coupons at the register and pass them out when someone redeems their Groupon coupon.

And of course, they'd be passed out to regular customers too. But at least with the Groupon customers, the restaurant owner may be able to recover some of their Groupon costs by getting these people to come back and order more food and drink.

Does anyone else like this idea? I'm thinking that mentioning how they can continue making more money off of the Groupon campaign, that may get my foot in the door.

I'll have to think of a catchy name for this idea, though

That would be a good value-added pitch. Most of the businesses we've talked to about SMS marketing, however, have been approached by Groupon and have turned down Groupon. Almost every single one of them said that they felt that (a) Groupon takes too big a chunk of an already deeply discounted price; (b) they feel that using Groupon would cheapen the perceived value of their service.

I agree. And with the businesess that signed up....we could come in as the knight in shining armor helping them recoup the cost of their Groupon mistake.

One spa owner told me that when Groupon came in and gave him the bottom line on what he'd actually receive after the discount and the Groupon cut he told them to get the HELL out of his place and never come back. LOL!
