I know many of you are getting leads from Groupon so I decided that I'll try that too. I came up with a letter that I would either email (if I have the owner's email address) or send snail mail. With the snail mail, I'll add a printout of their Groupon Ad.

Here's the letter I was thinking of sending. Tell me what you think or if it needs tweaked. I wanted to make it sound personal and not like a sales letter.

Dear Mr./Mrs. Business Owner Name,

I saw that you are using Groupon to bring new customers into your restaurant...and by looking at your page, "The deal is on".

Well congratulations.

Soon you'll start seeing an increase in sales while customers come in to redeem their coupons. But have you thought about what to do with them after they leave? Do you have a way to get them to return for more?

I know you're spending a lot of money with Groupon by discounting your food and it would be a shame if you were never to see those coupon customers again.

Well, I can help you bring them back. I can help you turn a loss leader into even more sales and more profits.

If you're interested, give me a call and I'll stop by your restaurant and show you how. The only obligation is a few minutes of your time.

I hope to hear from you soon.

When I go the appointment I'll show them either the SMS service or how to set up an opt-in email campaign....along with any other things the owners admit they need.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds good to me, but I'll leave it to the more experienced members here to give the constructive criticism!

Couchpotatoe, I have a quick question (slightly offtopic) if you don't mind me asking...what sms service are you offering/who are you using? I just finished reading a HUGE thread on SMS marketing, and would like to see what you're doing.

One thing I would suggest....maybe put a sentence or two in there to give a sense of urgency...maybe something letting them know that there is a limited amount of time in which they want to take advantage of your "consultation" (before all those new customers come in and redeem their groupons and are then out of reach).

Yes, I think you are right Mavericx.

      And @mrcouchpotato it's a really good email, I like it ;-)

That's a great idea Mavericx. Losing out on the early Groupon customers is a great reason for the sense of urgency.

        Thanks for mentioning it.

As for the SMS service, so far it's a toss up between Trumpia and AvidMobile. Both are easy to use (although Trumpia is a little more user friendly).

Trumpia has a cheaper monthly cost and limits their keywords. AvidMobile has a higher monthly fixed cost but is cheaper per text. Plus they have unlimted keywords.

Once I get my first customer, I'll decide.

    Mike,
Great idea! I own a restaurant I can tell you this approach will work. I sell Mobile to allot of restaurants as well, and they are definitely most concerned about one-and-done coupon customers. They all get sucked into the Groupon and Enjoy Book models and then sit around wondering why they didn't increase their cusotmer base (once the coupon is done). Great approach, good luck with it.

I like it MrCouchPotato and agree that a real sense of urgency needs to be in there. We often use urgency as a gimmick, but in this case, it is a fact.

I would also make it less obvious that you are a third party. Perhaps something like this:

      "Dear Mr./Mrs. Business Owner Name,

Congratulations!! Now that you have your Groupon ad completed, it is critical that you take the steps necessary to make these new customers come back again and again and again. Don't let your marketing go to waste with one-time only buyers.

      Blah blah blah......"

      Best of luck.

Something you might want to consider in your letter. Include a P.S. at the end with a call-to-action. People always read it even if they just skim the letter. Old direct marketing trick, but it works like a charm.

I havent gone so far as a letter yet but I did test a concept and made a little barter deal . One local biz sold a couple hundred Groupons and I called and told them how they needed to do their best to connect with as many people as possible and increase odds for future visits. I said that while they are there you can do One of 2 things. Sell them another 50 percent off cert that they had to buy today and use within 30 days, at least they keep the whole thing and that should about offset wholesale price. Or they could get the email address and promise to send another coupon OR it they were really motivated make the email a condition of getting the 50 percent off, I mean they already gave it to Groupon to get the deal so whats the big deal if they give again.

They are just going to do the additional cert offer and will check back with them in a couple weeks to see how many they sold.

  • Great letter Mr CouchPotato

You're going to visit them in person? Not exactly living up to your name lol.

Thank you for sharing your letter, I have some experience with writing copywriting for my own products, so I'll give you some ideas...

    ---

    Dear Mr./Mrs. Business Owner Name,

First off, I want to quickly congratulate you for using Groupon to bring new customers in your restaurant, I can tell you're the type of business owner that is willing to be on the cutting edge of marketing.

Exactly, the type of person I like to help...

Here's what you're going to experience after using Groupon.

Soon you'll start seeing an increase in sales while customers come in to redeem their coupons. Unfortunately, statistics show that while Groupon is great for customer acquisition without a proper customer retention strategy in place. All those customers may not return.

In fact, you may have experienced this same effect with other promotions? This can cause many restaurant owners to give up on advertising all together, because it doesn't have a high enough ROI and becomes a real waste of their time.

I know you're spending a lot of money with Groupon by discounting your food and it would be a shame if you were never to see those coupon customers again.

Well, I can help you bring them back. I can help you turn any loss leader into more sales and even more profits. In fact, by attacking your customer retention all of your marketing efforts will be improved and you will have a higher percentage of regular clientele.

Obviously, I can only work with a couple people on this cutting edge strategy and I'd love to work with you, but I can't work with everyone.

If you're interested in filling up your restaurant - even on the slow days, give me a call today and let's chat.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Anyways, just some quick ideas for you to test. It might be a little too long for an email... so test different variations, and especially the subject lines... add my Skype and we can mastermind on this strategy together.

    Thanks for sharing this strategy.

Real quick, how much will you charge for SMS? Or anyone else who wants to answer
