85 Percent Buy from Mobile Web, Not Apps

Great article in Mobile Commerce Daily revealing that 85 percent of Shoes.com purchases come from Mobile Web, not Apps. Link to article here: Brown Shoe exec: 85pc of purchases come from mobile Web, not apps - Mobile Commerce Daily - Multichannel retail support

While Apps get all the press and sizzle, this article shows that most people are using mobile-optimized websites for online purchase. This a great article for selling both Mobile Websites as well as standard SMS services to small businesses!

Rather than focus on creating or selling Mobile Apps, teach a business how to send customers text messages with URLs (or tiny urls) embedded into the message, which take customers to a mobile-optimized site where they can buy!

So what you are literally saying is that the future of I.M is in the mobiles or mobile optimized websites

well yeah because people always like the comfort & easy accessibility instead of a laptop we have now smart phones where we can buy things with the click of a button

God i must be jumping now in to mobile marketing . Anyway what`s your experience with mobile marketing? have you started it ?

Selling Mobile Websites to Offline Small Business is big, as is selling SMS Text Marketing to small bsuinesses. This article reinforces both!

The point is that few people, even those with Smart Phones, actually regularly use the Apps on their phone, and that for actual retail purchases made from a cell phone, the overwhelming majority are doing it right from within a Mobile Website (or mobile-optimized site), rather than thru an App the retail business has created.

It reinforces the point that establishing an SMS relationship with customers and driving them to a website, is by far the most common and effective way to use Mobile Marketing. Custom-made Apps are all the rage, but the overwhelming majority of actual purchases still go through a website!

just to clarify its 85% of all their mobile web sales not 85% of all there total sales i know you didnt say it was the total sales but i wanted to clarify that as i was like damn thats some awesome mobile marketing they are doing! lol

saying that though i expect it to be at that point in the not too distant future - mobile marketing is gonna be huge!

and i have been saying for the longest time half the mobile apps out there dont necessarily need to be actual mobile apps and could have been made as mobile web apps

good reference though thanks for posting

Apps were useful but are less and less so because more and more people have full internet access plans on their mobiles. I think I saw somewhere than the average apps was used only 3 times by a user... Better invest in a mobile site than an app if you're a business owner.

Good article. Thanks. This quote from it is right on the money.

"Personally I do not see myself downloading an app for each restaurant in my town. Just imagine opening all those apps to see the menus. This would be painful. Best to have a mobile website so they can find you on the go, fast, and easy to miantain."

I recomend everybody read the full article.

Yep! Good stuff to know, especially for techie teens who want to make some money but aren't yet old enough to legally get a job! I will be passing this off to my daughter!

....I'm so uncooly un-techie, that I don't own a *smart* phone. I'm too dumb for that! I traded mine in for a regular flip open phone. I hated holding that heavy phone...and that touch screen crap--omg! It was driving me crazy to figure out how to make a simple phone call!:p

Nail, I hear ya. My company is selling them as well. It's amazing when they "Don't get it"!!!

You almost want to hit them over the head with a board.
      It's amazing....
It's like if you have a website then you are LOOKING to get internet traffic.
      WELL.......................
If the website is not mobile then guess what..
      ****s BROKE!
      Sorry but true.
They ARE LOSING business by not having it mobile.
IT is FRUSTRATING to look up a business and not
be able to read it with out scrolling enlarging etc. and NOT all
phones can you even do that with...

So the business is P***ing off customers. Plain and simple.

Here's a good one we did a pizza place website about 9 months ago.
A month ago I called him and said hey listen we need to mobilize the site now.
He says yeah i don't think that may people are trying to get to my site
via phone. So I had my biz partner slap G Analytics on it for 30 days.

Well blow me over EVEN I WAS SHOCKED and I do this for a living.
He had 180 visits and 52 were from android and safari. 1/4 A quarter of the
visits were mobile that couldn't see a darned thing.

Here's the kicker he's still thinking about it.. OMG.
      Makes you shake your head.

So my feeling on restaurants is this, especially take out...
Here's the scenario customer wants to order from car, work, beach, gym etc to pick up for dinner on the way home.
Don't know about you but I know very few people that carry menus with them.
Well there is a good chance if the menu is mobilized that the customer may order more....
      Why... welll........
Because Maybe they want a pizza ans sub but as they are on phone placing order
they are looking at menu and may go ya know what also give me x and x.
Without the mobilized menu the idea may never have been placed but because they are looking at menu they have a much better chance at more sales then without a menu or mobilized site.

Sorry so long just my .02

I just don't think someone is going to want to have a phone full of mobile apps for all the places they like to buy online. Why bother? It is much easier to just go and visit the website if and when you want to. As long as the business has a good mobile optimized website then the apps are just not needed. Yes, some people will use the apps if they are offered but I really don't see the need.

      Will,

If there are business owners who don't realize why a mobile website is better than an app even if they are told, I am sure that there are visitors who will install many (website) apps on their phones

One of the last biz owners I contacted recently, kindly refused my mobile website offer telling me that they were already working on a Blackberry app for their site. I explained him why going for a mobile website would be better than going for an app which targets a specific device.

Now I better understand how difficult it is to explain something to someone who believes their way is the best way to go.

It's so true. One of the most frustrating parts of selling offline services can be the lack of knowledge people (business owners) have when it comes to all this technology. However more often than not they will try to tell you they know what they are doing and already have things set up best.

You just can't help some people.

Yeah WILL love them : ) LOL.
Yeah I had a Karate Academy tell me they were getting the APPLE APP.
I as well as you tried to explain You are LIMITING yourself to only APPLE users plus paying a fortune.
Cmon how many are going to go to the App store to get 1 little local karate place as an APP on their phone. YIKES.
But they new more than us. LOL

Yes the APPS versus Mobile Web War it's a doozy and yes all we try and do is educate educate educate. It can be frustrating for sure.

            Here's a good one.
About a month ago I walked in to my local AAMCO I knew they weren't "mobile" as I checked via my Iphone.
So I was hoping service man techy guy there could tell me who to contact about this issue.

He wagers me $200K that they are MOBILE. TRUE story Folks.
So i hit my safari and hell it aint. He grabs his phone shows me the APP
god knows what market place but Yup AAMCO is not MOBILE friendly
            to all google users.
But when you need transmission work.
You can do the following you ready.

            Go to marketplace
Search AAMCO because we all would go there FIRST for directions and
Phone number to our local AAMCO. (LOL)
            download it
            put in your username passcode
            Wait
AHHHHHHHHH now you have the transmission place on your PHONE.
            We all want that.

HOLY CRAP you got to love the sales man that sold them that.

But You cannot view anything easily on your mobile browser for aamco
if your on the side of the road. It'll take you some time to get that info. LOL

So sidebar I got a hold of the NEW marketing guy in charge of that area.
He agrees not a smart move on previous marketing guy..

I MEAN CMON don't we all want that APP LOL

So now he wants me to prove why my company should be the one
to develop the web based version.

            oi UGH!

    Good discussion.

The challenge will continue to be replicating the USER experience.

    Why?

Because analytics repeatedly show Mobile time spent (sessions) are a fraction
    of ecom.

The fact is, they are shorter and people are less apt to transact.
That is changing with more mobile optimized sites.

Just remember even though Mobile may be a huge channel source, it's about profitable engagement.

I think Mobile is currently suffering from the same lack of trust we all had years ago when doing transactions online. It took a few years before people became comfortable with the idea of doing transactions online and I think the same will be the case with mobile. I imagine many people think carrying out transactions on a mobile device is not as secure as if you were on a desktop PC with antivirus, etc.

I must say I am yet to purchase anything online using a mobile phone. I always much prefer to do it on my regular PC. I guess over time it will just become the norm.

The problem also is that it's a royal pain in the ass on most sites to try to navigate their order flow. It's just too slow, and the phone screens are too small. Prospects aren't gonna hang around.

Yeah, it's kind of like the old days of trying to watch video on a regular PC. It just didn't happen unless you had a whole day to sit there and wait for the damn thing to load.

As mobile connections get faster and faster and more and more websites become optimized for the mobile web, it will definitely take off. Hate to think what we will be doing on our phones in 5 years time!
