Question about SMS subscription lists

What is the general consensus or 'best practice' as to who owns the list? Your client or yourself?

I sell my services that enables them to send sms messages , build their subscritption list, host the app on my servers for a small fee, charge for the messages sent and train them how to get subscribers and send the messages etc. I really think the list belongs to my client since they paid me for my application, hosting and message charges. Even if they decide not to use my service I feel the list is still theirs.

    Some decide to keep the list and market to it, others give the list to the client. One thing for sure is you need to be VERY CLEAR from the start with your client about who owns the list. I respect my clients very much and let them know I won't be sending messages to their list if they leave. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth ya know.

    It's the business owners list plain and simple. Even though you are a service provider, that doesn't give you any right to the list.

    Never send messages to a list you didn't generate optins in for.

      Thanks zbw777. That is how I look at it as well. I imagine this thread dying on the vine so to speak because I am sure those that keep the list don't feel like justifying why they would keep the list.

      With SMS marketing I feel that we are not selling the products that each list would be opting in for. An example is: I don't sell pizzas so why would I need or want a list of phone numbers that wanted pizza specials.

      I am sure there are some out there that could come up with a reason to offer the subscribers an e-book on pizzas but it's not my style. I appreciate the couple of answers to my original question and it re-affirms what I was thinking.

        I agree, my clients build the list through there efforts. Just as you would not want aweber marketing to your email list.

        One thing that I have approached some of my clients with is list swapping.

        I have a landscape company and a also cleaning service . The have the same target base, so I help them leverage both lists to help each beneficially.

    Jim,

    Thats a great plan, and worth doing. I would do it sparringly or you may see opt outs because people who were interested in Lawn care may care less about house cleaning. But if you treat it as a special gift to our loyal followers and include a decent deal, then I think the merit is worth it.

    I just wouldn't overdo it.
