I just debuted QR codes in MY Hometown!! Local businesses LOVE them!!

Hi fellow Warriors,

I just wanted to say that I have taken a huge step in my business with QR codes. As owner of a local magazine, I have many customers/businesses that I've just recently introduced QR codes to.

There are so many fun and creative ways to utilize these codes in marketing campaigns.

For example, On the cover I placed a QR code with a cool "Introcuducing" caption. When scanned it will take the person to our FB page where they will automatically be entered into a drawing for gift certificates to local restaurants, etc!!

I'm also using a qr code to connect consumers to my local advertisers coupons!

This is all very exciting and it really has opened up a NEW, fresh way for local businesses to advertise. You'd be surprised ... many of these businesses don't have a website, much less a mobile site. I've thought about offering mobile sites to them, which I'd have to outsource, but definitely a GREAT and useful service that can be provided.

Just wanted to share ...

Cheers!

I'm sure you're quite busy ScottH, but yes you should definitely add the QR codes in your campaigns! Business owner's are intrigued by the funny looking codes at first and they indeed want to know/learn more, so it opens up a nice opportunity for a foot in the door!

Elitementor, I'm just learning about offline & mobile marketing, so I'm still trying to fit the pieces together. Thanks for the information in your posts. I have one nagging question? This really works in Dacula? I'm from Athens & I'm truely amazed at this.

I don't have any local business, but have thought about QR codes as a nice way to start out. I know there are other services that I maybe should offer first, but I kinda like the excitement in the QR codes!

Hi Eddie, Yes ... they like it at the same time ... while increasing traffic to the FB page they view special deals and offers from my advertisers!

The novelty nature can actually be used to help get your foot in the door. Imagine getting some flyers out to local business with a huge QR code printed on it telling them how to scan it to see a hidden message. They then go to a page that tells them what the code is and they can request a free one from you.

I haven't used that exact method but I'm sure something like that could work quite well. So long as people still don't really understand what they are you can and should definitely use it to your advantage.

QR codes are great for business marketing, but in my experience there is not too many people from the general public that know about it nor how they should be scanning them with there mobile phone camera. Not until the public catch on will the business see results.

I'm a fellow Aussie so I do agree with you. However they have taken off more overseas. Japan is QR code crazy and America is slowly but surely getting there. It's only a matter of time before they hit down under one would think. But until businesses start adopting them no one will know what they are.

I remember last week in one of the national papers here in Sydney a company had used a QR code in their print ad. I had never seen this before in Australia so I do believe companies are starting to catch on.

  • Excellent! They haven't really caught on that much in the UK yet but I am sure they will.

I have had a lot of success by putting one on my business card. When I go to networking meetings it is the first thing that people want to talk about. You don't even have to mention it because they bring it up and it is a great ice-breaker into your business.

Pardon my ignorance, but I just don't see how you monetize QR Codes?

Yeah, a couple of business owners I've talked to like 'em and they ARE catching on here in the states with the general public, but other than giving myself credibility with the business owners, I'm just not feeling any monetary love from QR codes.

I'm really open to suggestions here!

One of the ways to really monetize QR codes is to take people to a landing page that is offering a 10% / 20% discount. How can anybody pass that up?

I understand why the clients would like 'em, and how the customers would use 'em for things like a coupon, but not sure how that sends any money in our wallets, unless you are also suggesting you sell the FB Fanpage or Landing page the QR code leads to?

You can make money by offering value added services like tracking the usage of QR codes, dynamic codes, color codes etc. QR codes are actually catching up fast and this is the best time to profit from them. I use QR codes more as an entry point to get offline clients. Since most of them are new to it, they are interested. Once you get a client then you can go ahead and propose him other services like mobile optimized web site, local SEO, google places, Facebook fan page etc. etc.
