Google To Charge For Spots In 7 Pack?

Just had some guy from Infoserve on the phone telling me that Google Places is effectively dead for small business ranking because... quote: 'Google intends to charge for all businesses to get into the 7 pack. They are trialling it in America at the moment and it will be rolled out in the UK later this year.' Sounds like BS to me...anyone know anything about it?

This is new to me. If they did what will happens to Adwords above the maps listings? Sounds to me like some sales ploy to get buy to buy their services.

As far as I know, it's bs. I'm in the U.S., and I haven't seen it.

I have spoken with staff from a couple directories in the UK that have told me how they have a "special relationship" with google and are able to get businesses ranked, total BS.

Actually, that might not be a total BS... some larger companies DO have relationship with Google and they can do more than small guys. That doesn't mean they would outrank your listings.

I have experienced that myself few months ago, so I am not surprised anymore...

Google's Model = Provide It For Free -> Let People See It Converts Into $$ -> Offer a Pay for Immediate Results vs Organic Effort in Ranking

I don't think Google can ELIMINATE free listings...but I can definitely see people buying/bidding their way into top Google Ranking spots (with CTR etc. playing a factor just like Adwords)

I thought something similar was announced last year at some point?

I just posted about this in another thread. This could be what this is. Google is now charging for paid places. You will see them where the PPC above Places goes. Basically this is PPC just done through the Places listing.

When you see it, you will see a Places style listing on the very top and then the regular Places stuff below that. The tag they use in red with the letter in it will be blue for the paid stuff.

Google is very aggresively marketing via direct mail and telemarketing to get small business setup on this.

I am not sure what the end game is with Google. But they're hitting it hard.

        What? Google boost?

Google wants to provide great results... making everything available to be purchased, would reduce quality.

Not sure what it's called. to me it looks like paid Places. I just took on a client that was talked into a $600 a month budget and in 1 week was half way to hitting it.

After she hired me she asked me to turn it off. I simply logged into the Places listing and found the paid listing. I shut it off. Her Places is still fine.

Here is a pic of what I am talking about:

That's google boost. I tried it, it sucks no ability to limit time of day, exclude keywords, etc.

That blue map place can be done through Adwords by selecting address and phone extensions options.

Selecting these two options will show it in Adwords.

I attended a seminar a couple of months back and one of the rumors was that Google was going to charge for 1 to 3 positions within Google Places. I have been watching for any official news on it and nothing so far so it appears to be just rumors at this point.

    • Yes the screen shot is Boost. It's a KISS version of Adwords. Can't select KWs OR do negative KWs, so can get charged for clicks for services you don't offer. Google picks the keywords and it's all broad match, based on your categories.

Some say it's like letting the fox run the henhouse. For a small business person that does not have time to learn all about PPC and cannot afford to hire someone to manage Adwords it may make sense. But the click costs can get VERY high, so I don't see tons of business owners doing it.
