The type of business that I think will not survive for long

Although my argument is a general one, I will give a specific example to make it clear.

As some of you might be following, one of the latest hot topics in the offline marketing forum is mobile web design and development. A lot of things have been discussed on the popular thread started by scotth, and lots of different opinions were shared. A lot of warriors started successfully selling mobile websites in that time.

So, basically mobile web design is the act of designing a mobile friendly website for a person or business. It is no different than a regular website design in concept although there are some differences in detail.

When the mobile wave started, a number of businesses popped up offering mobile websites, via premade templates or custom design, for a monthly hosting fee up to $39/mo. And I believe some of them made a good deal of money. From my point of view, this is something unacceptable.

No business owner would be willing to pay a monthly hosting fee for the mobile version of their website if they knew they didn't have to. (Some of the business owners might not mind paying a monthly fee even if they knew they don't need to, and I am not talking about them because I can say nothing.)

And I believe as soon as a business owner realizes that, he would get angry and stop using that service. Wouldn't you? And marketers like me will do their best to educate business owners about what they actually need and what they don't. Which will also make their (mobile site+hosting providers) job really difficult to survive.

So, the type of business that I think will not survive for long is the one that exploits the illiteracy of others. No difference from an affiliate marketer who sells a totally unhelpful product to his visitors.

Well, just this week had a new customer, he's paying 35€ per month just for hosting. Small business site, 5-10 pages top.

So... definitely people pay for weird stuff.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Price is relative. Just because you think it is a rip off does not mean the biz owner does.

Ever watch The Price Is Right? Most consumers are way off point as to what the real price of something is. It is worth what ever you think it is.

Matt, I guess you missed my point as it is nothing to do with the price. Paying $39 or even $390 for hosting is totally understandable. But paying for hosting your mobile site while you already have a hosting account for your main site is what I call illiteracy.

The businesses that will do well are the ones that sell mobile websites, then build value added services around that, such as qr codes, location-based social media, mobile search, text message marketing, etc. Mobile is very much in its infancy, and marketers that approach mobile as a new, soon to be dominant communication channel, as opposed to the latest hot niche, will flourish.

          I totally agree with you!

Mobile marketing is the New Wave of marketing for local businesses. 97% of recipients open their text messages within a few minutes vs email.

Even if their in a middle of a converstion with you or someone else. (it is down right rude, however, they will read the text message!!)

This is a great time to get into mobile marketing for local businesses .

I think everyone has still missed the point from the OP. A good percentage of my offline business is "fixing" the mistakes of so-called mobile web designers. We put the mobile-enhanced pages into a sub directory within the domain, eliminating the extra hosting fee. A simple redirect script detects a mobile user.

One of these was for a local fast food franchisee a few years ago, and because of that one "fix" we have been getting tons of referrals and signing up several fast food chain franchises, restaurants, and dozens of other business niches right and left. They are now using other services we provide such as SMS texting nationwide, NFC implementation, and other marketing and mobile technologies.

Maybe it just comes down to terminology. If you called it a support fee, or a fee for updates but never actually did any would it be any different? If you do the site and never help them again and drop it on hosting they are already paying for then sure, that seems shady but if you charge for "hosting" and it includes occasional updates then it would be different.
