Domain Sale - how much to charge?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this but I was unsure where to ask.

I have a relative who has just started an offline consultancy in the UK. He has been approached by an eastern European supermarket chain with the same name as his company who want to buy his domain. They are moving into the UK and want to own all the domains for their brand.

Problem is he doesn't know how much to charge, and neither do I, as his is a new business so it isn't just multiply the revenue, rather what it is worth to them.

Anyone any ideas?

    Lou,
There is no simple answer to how much a domain is worth. Bottom line is how much will a buyer pay for it? You can check a number of sites like dnjournal to see what similar domains sold for.

Ask them to name their price first. Check out Roger Dawson's Power Negotiating, too.

You should ask your relative if he has the LEGAL RIGHTS to use that name/brand. Sometimes people have a company Mr MotoMoto but legally the company is in their own name.

The next question should be if the other guys "Have a International TRADEMARK" on that name/brand. Cause if they do (usually when a company goes international they brand it worldwide) they own the Trademark...

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

If the domain has no copy rights, Keep the domain and lease it to them. You can get nice passive income. Have to think out side the box on this.

Let them throw out a figure and go from there.

Since he just started, it is likely that he hasn't branded the name too strongly. So, my initial thought is it will be relatively easy for him to bail on the URL and start fresh.

So, besides the cash value (that still needs to be determined) maybe the real value IS outside the box.

Perhaps he could go with a reasonable or even low cost for selling the URL, with the promise of doing at least a small job for them.

Then he can have a testimonial from the large chain and perhaps even a case study. That would be worth far more than any amount he would be getting for the URL (in my opinion).
