Google Places without Address

Hi folks

Just wanted to pick everyone's brain on this. Have a client that wants to be listed nationally for keywords in each city. The service is nationwide, however the site and company don't have any physical offices in any of those cities, they simply act as a broker to the service.

Other than doing the "rent UPS/Postal box" (or possibly Skype numbers for each city if phone verification is working!), are there any other ways of doing this?

The client is in Australia, if that makes any difference.

Any ideas and thoughts would be MUCH appreciated!

Cheers

Seven

I'm pretty sure you can only have 1 Google places listing per physical address. Only way around that I can see is to get a UPS Box in each city or try and rent a mail box at some other business somewhere.

No I'm pretty sure you can have multiple listings, ie shops in a mall. But I agree with you, seeing as the company has no physical presence in any of those cities, I guess their options are limited to:
      a. Postal/UPS type box
      b. Pairing up with a partner company
      c. Paying someone $5 to use their home address....lol

What you contact random homeowners and ask them if you can use their address for 5 bucks. Does that work well?

Listing your client, with no physical address is against Google's TOS. Google Places is for LOCAL, physical brick and mortar businesses.

You can waste your time trying to game the system and make fake listings, but G is getting wise to these listings and blacklisting them all day everyday. In the end you will get zero results for your client and waste all their time and money.

You are better off focusing on getting their regular site listed highly in the normal serps for all the keywords in each city.

It's a good point. The organic optimization was the basis of the contract anyway, I was just thinking of being extra nice and optimizing for local as well, kind of a free bonus for the client. Technically the company does have locations in each city, but it's with partner companies. I'm just not sure all the partner companies would agree on using their details, hence why looking at other options.

Get shared office space arrangements in cities. Most mid and large cities have shared office spaces where you can use the address. My offline business does this. I pay $25/month and then $20 per hour for the boardroom. I paid approx. $100 up front to get my business name on the building's lobby sign and the right to use the address.

Using fake addresses is a major fraud and could be classified as a crime. "Renting" addresses is pretty much the same. Google rolls out phone calls asking businesses to confirm their location as in some cases the Google employees ask the business owners to look through the window and say what they see. If the business is unable to confirm their location they usually get instantly suspended. Not to mention that with Google Places getting more and more important and famous among business owners, especially in the US, competitors would often times follow the moves of each other and there are numerous cases of lawsuits for such types of scam.

      Cheers.

I see you are from Bulgaria, so perhaps it is there, but it's not in most countries. Law firms offer the service, it's usually part of the "incorporation" service they offer. On a more basic level, obtaining the rights from a landlord to use their address as a company's address is most definitely not fraud.

It most likely doesn't fit with Google's TOS, but what Google says isn't law....not yet anyway

EDIT: Most people are probably latched on to the whole "using UPS/PO Box" idea, but I'm actually referring to registering a physical addresses, without an actual representative of the company being physically located at the address during normal business hours.

What about small businesses that have 4 or 5 cities that they service? what is the best way for an actual local business in one city to come up on the places listings in a very nearby city that they actually service?

The legal and legit ways to do that would be:

      - optimize website for the whole county, not only for particular city
      - set Service Areas in Google Places listing
      - advertise via AdWords or Google Boost for the whole county/area
      - optimize locally (the Place page and the website) enough that it would appear for the whole area - as long as the cities are in the range of 20-25 miles it is possible to appear for searches of any city in that area

HI guys- would love your help on this.

I am working with a house-cleaning service that is a home-based business. I am familiar with doing the SERVICE AREAS in google places, to not show her home address, but what about citations. Do we need to make citations that show her Name ADDRESS and phone number?

So, even if the home address wasn't on google, it would be showing up in merchant circle, etc. right?

      Hi Emily,
Citations are just to make Google know that you have clients that like your product. You can make a QR code they can use to go directly to the form and fill it out quickly.

If you don't want to show your address make sure you tell this to Google they tend to publish anything you throw at them.

        .
"Reviews" are what shows that clients like (or dislike) your product.

"Citations" are mentions of a business name/address/phone #. Primarily in other local directories.

Customers don't fill out citations, they fill out reviews.
