What's the best way to optimize a YP.com listing?

I'm wondering what the best way is to optimize a YP.com listing. I don't do much work with the YP, but was curious how listings move up in rank to the top 5 spots for searches.

Can anyone offer some feedback as to what steps need to be taken to get high rankings without having a featured/paid listing?

If you are talking about YP.com rankings on Google then its quite easy.

    1. Add reviews with keywords included

    2. Get back links to your YP.com listing with the keyphrases you are tarketing

Actually, I'm referring to ranking within the actual YP.com website. Like doing a search within their site. How do those rankings come in to place?

OK I see what you mean but why would you want to do that? I have lots of clients that have been coned by the yellow pages into spending thousands of pounds in advertising with no or little results.

Why not get their listings ranked on Google like I do, no cost to the client and much more business.

A potential client asked me about it, so I was trying to figure out a way to do it without actually having to pay YP.com to get a featured listing.

Obviously I would much rather go the search engine route, but the client was asking specifically about the YP since he can list his business for free on there.

Haven't really had anyone ask something like that before about a YP listing, so I thought I would ask for advice in here.

I think you have to buy a paid listing. "Featured businesses" are listed at the top.

On another not this was the first time I have ever been to YP.com. I regularly use Yelp. Is there a way to see how much traffic YP.com gets?
