How do you market a client to a wider area?

For those of you who have clients in the suburbs or surrounding communities of a large city, how do you market their local listing for that larger area?

For example, if you had a client in the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula, say in Belmont or Foster City, those individual markets may be too small so you'd want to expand the area to the surrounding communities. Do you use keywords in your marketing that are specific to each community (that would be a lot if you were building backlinks) or do you try to use the entire surrounding area as a keyword? Say divorce lawyer bay area or peninsula divorce lawyer?

Thanks for your input.

Generally it helps to have header tags that convey this information by individual city, ex. "Serving the Bay area: Belmont, Foster City, San Francisco" and so on.

Further, have each location served on its own page of the site - you could easily make one contact form and copy it to each page for whatever city they're interested in.

    So like:

    domain.com/foster-city/
    domain.com/belmont/

    etc.

Also be sure to define the service radius in your google places page for that client

edit: I wouldn't include the general area like "bay area" unless that term was a widely used search term. So if "bay area fish markets" was more widely searched than "Foster city fish markets" then I would dedicate a section of my site to that like domain.com/bay-area. Otherwise I would focus on naming the individual places rather than the generic term for the area.

I think the best thing would be to focus on suburbs part or suburbs places as people who typed those in would be a lot more likely to keep a lot more in a customer but if you want to go for something bigger like a divorce lawyer in a bay area or peninsula divorce lawyer. It will take you a little bit more work i think. I think the bigger area would be more competitive whereas the suburbs would be last competitive. Both will probably take you the same amount of backlinking and the suburbs will be easier and you can move better.
