Start a local chat forum then rent out places to local businesses

I've read a lot here about creating business listing directories and then selling listings/ad space. The principle seems to work pretty well.

I have thought of creating a forum instead of just a directory - my inspiration comming from a site I frequent here. Just look at how many directory listings there are all paying 100 euros! And there are others. All this was built by forming a community forum first and then selling directory listings to its members.

I have noticed that in my city there is nothing resembling a chat forum and there are 200,000 inhabitants in the city expanding to almost 500,000 if you include the immediate areas in the conurbation.

I have checked the domiian availability and mycityforums.com/.co.uk is available. I think I could easily create a successful forum.

Why do I think this will work? Well, if a business listing directory can be successfull at getting traffic with the visitors having nothing to do on the site apart from browse local biz listings, then surely an interactive, viral forum will do a lot better. It will naturally create content, backlinks and attract traffic and the local businesses will surely find that attractive.

Here's how I would do it.
  • Set up the best forum software (vbulletin) on a keyword domain.
  • Install the facebook plugin that lets users log in with their facebook profile - update their wall with their posts automatically.
  • Use my extensive network of family/freinds in the city to post for me to get things started.
  • Possibly use forum posting service if they can do it on a local level.
  • Create a facebook fan page and use facebook ads to drive initial traffic.
  • Use adwords to drive initial traffic.
  • grow the forum for 6 months
  • Add a directory section where local biz can have a link for £20/month.
Has anyone done/doing this successfully? Are there any obvious flaws to this plan?

I like the idea of a forum as well, however, and I'm speaking from experience here, so do the hackers.

It's bad enough when you have a blog that the hacking attempts easily number 50 to 100 attempts a week, with the forum we ran, it was 50 to 100 attempts a day.

Don't know how they did it, or how they got in, but it caused my hosting company to shut down my account twice, which effected all of the domains I had on that account.

The last time, it took me three days to find and delete all of the malice code before I
    could reactivate my account.

I don't remember the software we used, so I can't help you there.

Well I'm sure there is forum software that is useable, anyway thats just a minor technical hurdle in the way of the overall concept.

No one else got any experience or thoughts on this?

I make local sites that I leverage as an asset for local small businesses to use. It works out really well overall so I have confidence that if your city has a need for a forum, it will bring you offline business clients. I also use social media to attract people to my local site so I know that works too. I think you have a really solid business plan, as long as you keep away the spammers as another poster mentioned.

Yes def need to manage the spammers but can't see it as being a deal breaker.

I think what I really want to know is how much work would be involved in starting a successful local forum as far as promotion and moderating it goes.

Has anyone else started a forum from scratch? Really considering doing this for the new year as when it is setup it could mean some really good hands off income.

I never started a LOCAL forum, but i have started a few forums from scratch,

Starting a forum is pretty basic stuff, Hardest part is deciding on what you want it to look like, and how you want it to work. All in all pretty easy.
I think just about anybody with just a small amount of tech savvy can do it.

The promotion part, is pretty much the same as promoting any other website, and if you have something people want, you will get the members.

Moderating it not so easy. as a matter of fact, its a real pain in the *ass.
even when you have a bunch of people doing it for you.

I have personally never found forums to be "hands off" money.
and prob once a month i get fed up with ours and don't even want to deal with them any more. I haven't killed any of them off ... yet... i am too stubborn.

I do know some people with tons more experience then i do with it, just let there dies off because they did not like it anymore.

The bigger they get, the harder they are to deal with /manage
and the costs start going through the roof. So you have to have money put aside that you know your going to lose for a while, or you need to have it start making money fast to cover your growth.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me more about why the moderation is a pain even if you use others? - howmuch time does it take?

And also when you talk about costs are you meaning hosting costs?

One of the big "misteaks" people make is making a product and then looking for someone to buy it. I didn't read anything above about research showing that people would actually want something like this.

So yes, I think that is a possibly fatal flaw in your plan as you outlined it.
