Claiming Google Places

I heard that it may be easier to get GP page ranked higher, faster, if you set-up citations prior to claiming the GP page.

Can anyone confirm this?

Does it really matter?

Thanks,

My experience in setting up Google Places has been exactly that.

I always do my research on citations and set those up first before I ever claim my GP page.

Keep in mind some clients will have already claimed their page without really knowing what a citation is they probably have changed their name, or address or even phone number over the past years. This will have an effect on the citations.

      Thanks Michael Paul,

Assuming they have claimed it, and it's a medium to large city, in the auto repair service with medium competition, how long would it normally take you to rank that?

I see another on here stating that he got #A position in 34 days (and that was fast).

Do you quote a time frame at all, with "caveats" depending on how much you have to fix and the competition level?

      I appreciate any advice.

        AOne,

Everything I've ever done and read is that you should get all citation listing updated to match all contact info exactly.

So when you do your GP page, you certainly want it to be the current address, and then you have to go find all the other listings and correct them to the new info as well.

I have never seen anyone state otherwise.

Will there be a negative effect if the website you have registered on Google places routed to your new site address. Or should you change your information with GP to the new address without any backlash?

To be honest, I believe that either way works just as well as the other in my experience.

I can understand the logic behind completing all of the citations first (and I believe you could see QUICKER results this way, maybe), but many businesses want their Places page up ASAP, so some consultants won't really have that option to go and complete/correct all of the citations first.

Some of these citation websites will have inevitbly scraped old/outdated/changed business information for your clients, so you want to make sure that you get as many live listings as you can with the new information. Then I would build some backlinks to these live listing URLs to get them noticed quicker. Doing enough of these with the CORRECT information will eventually overpower/correct all of the incorrect/outdated listings, even if they're being pulled through WITHIN Google Places.
