Proof that Offline Companies are ready for a Fresh Take on Marketing

Hi Guys...I was just packing up my house and came across a Penny Saver from 04. I keep things like these to look at my old copy and other business' copy. I was surprised of how weighty the Penny Saver felt in my hand. So, I compared it to the one I got yesterday. Yesterday's Penny Saver has 32 pages compared to 73 pages in the 04 Penny Saver. Wow!

This is definitely the right time to help business' realize how they can increase their profits with the numerous ways to establish an on-line presence. Business' are ready we just have to point them in the right direction! Hard selling should not even have to come into play because we have what they are looking for! I feel its selfish on our part not tell them about these services, and I am sure all of us want to be selfless :-) plus its rewarding when you see business' benefiting from your efforts! The only reason ppl shouldn't except our services is if they already have enough business and if that is the case, we'll just go to their competitor because we definitely wouldn't want them to get bombarded with extra sales!

Just wanted to share

Excellent post Tara! I feel the same way in many regards. One should also have that attitude when approaching businesses. The confidence will be felt in the presentation for sure. The upside to the downside of the feelings one experience when they are turned down, even rudely, is to know that business owner really lost a golden opportunity to be involved with your business. "They" are the ones who truly lost out.

    Thanx Daniel!

LastWarrior, I love that point about the upside of the downside. If all of us approached our business with that state of mind I am sure it would be more profitable. Confidence attracts Cash!

I agree that now is the right time to guide more businesses into the online advertising world. The key to success for anyone who wants to make money in this market is taking time to educate businesses who are not online and show them what kind of ROI they can get online vs traditional advertising.

I beg to differ with you on this one Jeremy. Guiding and educating businesses has been a waste of my time. Even the ones that I did convince a few years ago were my worst clients.
There are plenty of businesses that get Internet Marketing and Social Media, those are the only ones I try to focus on.
Remember the ones who do "get" Internet Marketing are most likely not being serviced properly or some PR company all of a sudden thinks they know Internet Marketing. This is where I search for clients in this space. They pay more money and understand that it takes time for results.

Some good points all around. Alot of print advertising is still down due to the economy. When it comes to the Internet many small business owners still don't get it, what they're purchasing or why. They "know" that it's where they need to be, but...fill in the blank with all sorts of excuses, logistics and realities. I'm a proponent of educating customers but agree wholeheartedly with James about attracting the ones who do get it. They are better customers all around.

    Yep,

My local yellow pages has shrunk by 50% and it now has Both the yellow and white pages ... So that makes a 75% reduction in one year....

They are now pushing online in addition to the yellow pages ... but business owners are really screaming at the cost and no longer cutting those checks like they used to...

Especially now that there are so many options available!

I fully agree that now is a great time to "guide" offline small business owners on how to develop an online presence. I would like to get some opinions as to how successful do you think offering online educational courses would be. Basically, you would sell the small business owner on a monthly paid membership allowing him to log on and access 1000's of hours of very well categorized and high quality educational material such as streaming video and audio courses. This way, they can watch during downtime or after work, and immediately implement what they have learned.

The trouble is that they (small biz owners) all know they can figure it out themselves online with free tutorials because everyone tells them that, and I know a couple of do it yourselfers who wouldnt change their sites for the world, because they make so much money from them.

However, MOST business people, though aware still dont want to do it themselves.

I can mow my lawn, but I dont.

I think the biggest problem with many would be offline marketers is that they seriously dont understand that offliner biz owners can use a little terminology they learned from the last salesperson that came in the door, but that doesnt mean they understand anything.

For those of us who spend alot of time online, its easy to talk to everyone like they should know certain things...and its easy to forget that most small biz owwners dont. Sure there is the exceptional savvy one, but 9 out of ten arent that confident in what they are saying when they try to talk about IM, even though they throw around a word or two.

So the title of your post attracted me because, I do think a fresh approach is needed, one where you assume NOTHING... and you realize the truth that these guys need their hands held, you have to explain everything in terms they can understand and clearly relay the BENEFIT amongst all the techie chatter.
