Making Sure I Get Started The Right Way

H, everyone. I'm wanting to get started in this business soon. I've put off in the past for various reasons, but now I want to do this. My approach will be a bit different because I need an assistant, someone to speak for me.

So my plan is to find a person to do the presentations to potential clients, train them, then do the work of getting the clients interested in my service. Everytime a client gets signed up for the service I will pay my "assistant" a part of the fee I charge the client.

I'm just wondering about what steps I might want to take first. I'm thinking i'll need to hire my assistant by contracting them out using a 1099, since they won't be working with me in an office space. All they really do is just interview the clients and talk with them during that process. Im thinking I should also make sure this method of doing business is legal where I am.

So my plan is, get my business licenses, find my assistant, get the forms for them, then proceed to get potential clients interested after finding the right small businesses to target. Right now I can't think of anything else, but I'm tired and I'm typing this from a touch screen phone, so I'm sorry if theres any typos. Anybody have any suggestios or anything to add?

Make sure to get your business license and you really should incorporate (into an LLC). You can do it yourself and it isn't that expensive for the protection and legitimacy it gives you.

You can 1099 your assistant....BUT you need to have an agreement with them setting the timeframe (say 1 yr and then renew each year). It is also REALLY IMPORTANT to make sue you understand what you can and can't do to keep them an 1099 and not have the IRS classify them as an employee. The biggie is that you CANNOT tell them times they have to work. This has to be independent on their part. Obviously, you can tell them what you expect them to produce (X amount of sales or Y amount of calls/visits per day).

Personally, I think the best benefit to you right now is to do some of it yourself. Go out and sell....it is a GREAT education and helps you understand what that assistant will have come up (objections).

You wan the assistant there if you need efficiency, meaning that it is better to pay them the fee where you can efficiently do more work than to do it yourself.

If you are not a "salesman" type, well this is the BEST education you can get.....go out and do it. It really is not that hard and most people will appreciate if you are not the next "slick" sale guy they having coming into their business and bothering them. Just make sure to have the BENEFIT to them laid out....that is key. Nothing matter until you can show benefits to the business owner.

Give a couple of services away for free in return for testimonials. I am sure you know that route. This will give you credibility for the next guy you talk to.

    Good luck!

Alright, thanks.Yeah, I think what I'll do is start off doing this by myself for free for a while. That way I can gain experience and figure out if this is something I actually want to do.

I really appreciate the information, thanks.
