I am just starting with the offline marketing and wondering how people on this site got their first clients. funny stories are welcome if anyone has them.

The easiest way to get started is to just "chat up" people you are doing business with. "How's business" is an easy open. Keep it light. After you are done with your transaction...go home, look at their site, and fire up a "thank you" e-mail and offer up some free tips on their site.

More times than not, that will turn into your first client. I was shocked to see how big my dog walkers business was, after I converted him into a client.

My first client came from a random email from a guy my husband went to school with. He just sent out a mass email asking about website design, and my husband shot him an email back saying I did internet marketing, web design, etc., and it went from there. That was one easy deal.

Another thing to do is just pay attention. I have been in small stores looking around and just overheard the owner telling a customer how their web designer couldn't fill this need or that need and politely interjected that I could handle that for them.

I have also seen tons of places with their fan page listed on their door and go to it and see there is nothing special about it. Nice way to find clients, too....just set up a sample and email it over to them. Just a few small ideas.

      Hey Matthew,

One of my very first clients came from my joining the Chamber of Commerce.

We met at a networking breakfast, and he was very interested in internet marketing (he was basically pre-sold) and then, over the course of a few more events, he decided he could trust me so we ended up doing business - a one time up front along with a monthly fee.

He is easily my best client, owns a carpet cleaning business, is very positive and we have really helped "put him on the map" in more ways than one!

He has been very happy with his association with our company because I basically "test" new marketing concepts (free to him) using his business and he gets the new customers from it!
