Best wso or information source for google places?

Well first off guys I would like to thank you all. Between reading here, few other forums I have started building my offline empire. I started out doing sites and now that I have figured out how to rank sites rather easily I'm not even having to do much cold calling. I'm now migrating out of web design and going towards lead gen/ seo.

I had a client call me today which has an outdated site and wants a fresh web design. I didn't even quote them a budget before they said they want to stay under $5k. They already have decent google places listings for a few keywords and about 14 reviews.

I plan on over delivering by redesigning their site, build a facebook fan page, rank their site, and I would like to get them on the map for more google places terms in order to increase business.

Could someone point me in the right direction for learning what I need to do to accomplish this? I already have a plan for getting more reviews.

What I'm confused on is what actually goes into ranking the places page? I know reviews are important.

I read somewhere that you have to backlink your google places page. This makes sense to me since you see sites with no reviews in spot #1. I'm throwing all of this in as extra, but I still want to make sure I'm doing things correct in order to help my clients business. Iv'e worked hard up to this point and don't want half approach anything.

Thank you and to any noobies reading this keep working hard. Even if you just do a little bit each day. I remember doing websites for free now people are paying me unreal amounts of money in order to help their business.

There aren't a whole lot of tricks, your probably too advanced for one of the from the ground up guides, I have seen one or two. Besides getting reviews the other big factor is having citations on other directory sites and even paid business registries, be sure the exact contact information is used.
I did see one forum posting suggesting that in typical Google fashion backlinks to the places page have an effect. i can't confirm this, linking to a local page would be a rare instance in real world circumstances.

Thank you for the insight. I figured there was more to it then getting reviews and citations. If that's all it takes then I should be fine. I learned seo rather quickly so guess I will spend a couple days reading then get to work.
