Free Google Mobile Websites

Here is a way to set up your own free mobile website sort of like Google blogger.

Google Sites - Mobile Templates

While they are easy to build and quick to implement there is still no substitution for a customized personal Mobile Website.

I am going to use them to promote my mobile web business.

What do you think.

Do you think it would be a good idea to tell potential customers about this? Is there not a danger that they'll think this is good enough and they don't need to shell out a couple of $100 for their own site?

    Just playing devils advocate.

I'd say that you always want to own your own mobile site, that you can make yours look better and more professional (it's kind of ugly IMO) and that we can tailor it more to their needs.

      Hi,

Brilliant, thanks for the tip. Google Mobile is a quick way to do it... of course as a web designer though I would prefer the splurge and go for something a little more customized!

This could help sell them on the site on the front-end though. Thanks.

    Quentin..

DAMN...Google smells the money!!! They know where search is heading!!

What would be nice....someone..(like You Quentin)...should develop a report listing the CONS of why a business should consider a CUSTOM site and NOT rely on the bastids from Google...I know I would buy it because I consider you one of the high mucky mucks when it comes to Mobile Sites

Because quite frankly...IF I was a small business business..and saw this...I WOULD use it....and in response to "UGLY"......Most owners might not care...

They have a mobile site...something they couldn't figure out for themselves..They have a mobile presence WITH their phone number that is prominent!...

BUT..this is the first Ive heard or seen it!! ..and I'm on a bazillion lists..

and with 10 damn google accounts!

Oh well...THIS still is "vellllyyy interestink"

Thanks Quentin, look forward to checking it out.

My take on the mobile sites depends on the business, what users will actually do on the site. For most small businesses they just need their information to be viewed easily, not a fancy website look, to satisfy mobile search.

What I am going to do......is take a friends landscaping business..and set it up with this... THEN see how well google likes it in the SEARCH results! Thats the key I think...will google give their own stuff precedence?

because the same adage holds true for mobile site..as regular sites.....IF the mobile user cant find you when hes looking for "Emergency Plumbing Repair In Kalamazoo" then you defeat the whole purpose.....

    Right?

Creative..thats EXACTLY what I'm thinking! but damn..I hate the bastids....maybe many of you dont remember years ago when they came through and got rid of blogs on blogger...poof..gone.....just a few days ago..Wonder Wheel...an excellent Niche digging tool..poof...gone.....

as I said...I'm gonna experiment....see what comes of it...

Of course customized websites are better then google mobile websites because you have more abilities. but you could offer google mobile websites as a freebie and then upsell. what do you think about it?

as I said in my very first post...This is where someone who is VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE(Quentin) about the ins & outs of mobile....needs to chime in.....and yes....I agree..having a true site..that you can optimize for search ....is the best method...

Me I would be using them as squeeze pages for your other mobile sites, additional service for your customers etc.

They are only good for iphone as they do not shrink and fit and some of the stuff like movies etc don't work to well.

See! See! I knew he would eventually come forth! ahhhh..see..now Google doesn't tell you all that! still gonna experiment though...see how they treat it in search..

BUT..Thank You Quentin for sharing your knowledge!!

Hey don't look at this as something that will affect your business but will enhance it. It is just like google blogs and you don't see a lot of businesses leaving traditional blogs to go put it on blogger.

This is a great way like blogger to get additional exposure.

      Thanks for this, Quentin.

I will have to think about how to use this, if at all. I am loving learning about mobile websites, these days.

You say to use them as squeeze pages. Know I know what a squeeze page is, of course, but what's your strategy, here?

Right! This little tid bit of info will help many small businesses. Once any limitations become an issue they'll be more open to custom. I don't personally subscribe to the custom but then I'm not doing much with mobile marketing right now. Too many small businesses just need to make their info visible which is my design book means functionality first, pretty second. Too many searchers are looking for quick, easy info, not an online experience from these sites (I'm talking local small business services mostly).

Couldn't agree more. As has also been mentioned above, it is very unlikely that businesses are even aware of this service and even if they are and are looking for a free solution then they are not your target market anyway.

Not really sure as I just found it but I would think similar to how I would use blogger and add posts etc from different businesses we do work for.

Played around with this a little and made a VERY rough page.

Took about 2 minutes. With a little time and effort, this could be a very valuable tool in certain situations.

That would be a good differentiation point actually!

Sure you get a free (crappy looking) mobile site from Google but it doesn't automatically get redirected.

Custom design is always going to win out over services like this. Besides, you don't want all of your customers sites to rely on a third party service like Google.

To those who feel a little threatened by a free service like this, just think about all the free blog platforms available out there and all the people who still pay for custom blog design. Think about all the free website builders available these days and all the people still paying thousands of dollars for custom website designs.

    It's all in the selling.

Your potential customers are not trolling the Warrior Forum and would probably never even know this Google Mobile website creator exists. If they were so inclined to go out and look for free solutions like this then they are not the customers I want to work with anyway. They will end up being those customers who question everything you do and take up 80% of your time for only 20% of your profits.

WOW! Is this the information Ryan Deiss is trying to get us to pay $200 for???

I think its a good starting place, but also didn't realize that these were only good on iPhones.

    Thanks, Quentin, for the info!

Great call Will - that is exactly right. Not everyone is our potential client. We certainly need to learn to be selective, and target the businesses best suited for what we have to offer.

Are there any custom mobile site builders that do not show links back to the software that built them?

I am looking for something that allows me to brand my company not the tool I use to build with and will also make the site mobile ready for ALL phones not just an iphone etc.

Actually I just realized I should have started a new thread instead of hi-jack this one. My apology. I will start a new thread.

Hmmm. Just had a play with the Google Mobile Site. Seems to be using the standard site but you can't access the mobile template/s if you go straight to google sites. Seems useful as a basic starting point but there's no redirect from your existing site that I can see. You can redirect the google site to a subdomain on your own site and maybe redirect from there I guess. Just a quick review based on about 15mins of poking around.
      Cheers folks!

Ah ... now I see. I think most customers are still going to prefer a customized mobile site, but it's an interesting idea. These are pretty basic and not very attractive (ugly ) and I would want my mobile sites to match the branding and color scheme of my regular sites.

Now, what I liked is the video. Quentin, you should make a marketing video. Or perhaps you have, I haven't been on your site for awhile. Great product and resource information however.
