Price for Mobile Websites?

About to start selling mobile websites to get my foot in the door, so:

1) What price should I charge?

2) Or should the price depend on the business?

Thanks in advance!

They are usually in the ballpark of $250+
Since they are extrememly easy to make but there is still tons of factors only you can decide the price.

$250+ depends on client and difficulty... For example is it going to need to function like a full on web app as well... I have had to build extremely complex and dynamic mobile sites integrating it heavily with a cms price was a lot higher then!

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

After reading the big a$$ thread on mobile websites in this offline section I have settled on telling customers that by check the site which will have 6-8 pages will cost $697 but if they pay me by paypal, credit card(into my paypal) or postal money order I will give them a $200 discount of $497.

I have made over 50 mock up sites for local businesses over the last 2 weeks while getting ready to launch my mobile websites business. I just made an image out of their regular websites images and made a homepage for them and google map with their clickable phone number. All the info I need for the site comes from their regular website unless they have more for me.

I'm hoping to kill it at the $497 level. I'll soon find out!

If the value of what you deliver (or the pain of not doing it -- i.e., lost opportunity) outweighs the cost, price won't be so much of an issue. Also, I would suggest bundling it with other services that have high perceived value and promoting it as a solution.

If I am a small offline business owner (and I was for many years) and someone pitched me on a 5-page mobile website that does this, that and the other thing, I would simply shop it around apples-to-apples and find the best deal (if I even thought I needed it).

However, if someone approached me and pointed out an issue or opportunity I wasn't aware of and then offered a strategic solution that met a specific business need, I would be much more likely to buy.

This is true. You are not in the business of selling mobile websites... you are in the business of helping other businesses get more customers and more money. That's how you need to approach things. They don't care about the HOW they just want the results you can give them.

Having said that you will need to talk price eventually and my average is $297 for a simple 5 page site. They can add extra pages and the price will vary on how complex those extra pages are. Some customers will want a total custom looking site built and for that I will need to develop the site from scratch and I will charge accordingly.

Decoy pricing can also work very well. That is, you state some other prices/packages that serve to make the original package you offer seem like an even better deal. So you could offer maybe 3 separate packages:

Simple Mobile Site (includes 3 pages) - $275
Standard Mobile Site (includes 6 pages) $397 but on special for $297
Advanced Mobile Site (includes 10 pages) - $497

The middle standard package is the one you are trying to sell and you can see how by adding the basic and advanced packages on either side, it makes the middle package seem like an even better deal because now they have something to compare it against.

I explain this concept in a little more detail here:

I think everyone on this thread is selling mobile or desktop websites way too low. This industry never calculates into their prices unforeseen circumstances and operating costs that are prevalent in all builds.

Add in the customer expectations that are usually very high, but alas the sites are usually quoted and sold as "quick builds", again as stated by almost everyone on this thread. The results are broke designers and designer companies and a lot of clients goods were never delivered (i.e. websites).

Solution, get everyone to think "profits", not pricing according to what everyone else is doing which is pricing according in terms of "time spent to build".

Design complications (robustness) and overall quality (Google Quality Score acceptable) should immensely affect final pricing.

Plus the design changes that always come up as the client sees the site come together in real time. My estimations from my own experience indicates most people are selling the sites at 15% of their actual value. Whomever first said "20% markup and I will make money" died dead broke and today anyone that believes that a 20% markup (labor or material cost) is enough to run a business has not owned and operated a business since 1970, especially when estimating total labor and final material costs.

I will be more than happy to give credentials to back up my assumptions, but only via PM.

I think and can support mobile sites should be sold for a minimum of $795 - for a skinny site, a mid range for $995, and $1,295 UP if they want it tied into their main site other than by simple links. I always think about selling them a full site or upgraded full site as well, plus SEO, SEM, etc. All "upsells", become monthly recurring revenue!

If we price ourselves right, then we make money and the client gets what they were "expecting". Over a year or two, the difference in $250 and $1,297 is not "material". With better pricing, you can give a lot of "time" stuff to the client for free. ;>)

      Sorry, "but I digress"...

You can also give your new clients the option to pay you in monthly payments. This ultimately gives you better business control of your monthly revenue and expenses. $297 per month is a magical number. Then you can get closer to the $1,295 number because you eased the pain to make the decision to buy from you NOW. Customer expectations is the key.

Offline Warriors, you should be Really listening to Chief Naka

In my experience, even charging $500 is not worth my efforts and it shouldn't be worth yours.

You have to take into account:

        1. how much time and money you spent getting this client.

        2. How demanding this client is. This will take up your time and energy. I remember I had a gig up on Fiverr where people expected $100 worth of service $5, people like this EXIST

        3. Does the client contact you often (another issue you have to deal with)

        4. Do they want to meet up more than once?

        5. The back and forth and back and forth. In my experience, my longest web design project took over 6 months (client having company meeting to make any small change), but the average takes about a month to complete.

So keep these in mind and charge accordingly.

For me $1000 minimum for a mobile site. $1500 minimum for a website.

Just ASK with confidence. If a locksmith comes to my door and charges me $100 because I lost my key, then I can easily charge $1000 for a mobile site.

P.S My outsourcer charges me $90/mobile site and $150/website

I'm sorry but, seems that everyone here is talking about "One-Time" sales. Sell one...then go hunt another...etc...etc.

I think in terms of "Sell once - Collect Forever"

Example: "Tourist Season" will soon be here. Tourists/Travelers are Hungry and (in this day and age) they ALL carry some sort of Mobile Device.

Get 8 or 10 Hotels to agree to place your 11 x 14 plastic stand on their front desk. On these displays are the words, "Looking For A Place To Eat?"...with pictures of a Pizza and a Steak, Cell Phone, large QR CODE and the words, "SCAN HERE!"

Then...make a "Restaurant Directory" (Here's an example; http://www.mobisiteindex.com/princeton ) Each restaurant gets a Front Page (which includes Photo, Short Description, Tap to Call button and a MAP) and a Lunch Menu Page and a Dinner Menu Page (Click on "American and BBQ")

These can easily be sold for $185 SetUp and $185/mo! (20 restaurants x $185 = $3,700 per Month...then go to the next town)

Wow! I have t o agree with both Chief Naka and damasgate. Though the economy may be tough for all it does not mean the value is any less, that is if it is being presented to the right type of clients.

Some things to consider when qualifying your prospects and this is a must and never lower your price without taking something away from the package being offered.

    1. Does the client have a brand awareness (logo, letterheads, t-shirts, etc.)

    2. Where are they marketing and how are they currently marketing their business. (Print, Local Coupon Magazine, Yellowpages, etc.)
    * This is really going to tell you if the are worth the time and effort.

    3. If their marketing online find out where and how and are they paying for it.

While I know this may be obvious, most do not to this degree of finding out what the experience was and why the had success or not.

This can in most cases opens the door for drilling down more and building the relationship.

Having set prices for the service you provide is also important to show (of course just for the basics packages). Also provide add-on services with pricing on a brochure or pricing sheet. This give the impression that you are confident with your pricing and your business.

It not necessary to close the deal immediately unless you want to come off desperate and season business owner will smell this mile away.

With all the information gathering you have obtained and provides for an opportunity to close the deal, then let the business owner know that if what you have shown as your basic packages works for them lets move forward. Collect the check.

But if you really want to turn even a mom and pop shop in the a money machine then take note and read these twice.

Here is an approach that some of you may or may not have thought about. But before that have you truly thought about all that you want to offer your clients, I mean really really thought about it and how.

I know all to well what it is like for you guys to want to just make a sale to maybe pay a bill when your starting out and that is fine. Again we all have been there too.

Besides thinking about what you really want to offer your clients be it just Mobile Websites, or SMS Marketing, QR Code Marketing, Landing Pages, Coupon Pages, Directories, whatever it is makes all the difference in the world whether you will stay in this mobile game or not.

See we are to our clients and or potential clients suppose to be the experts, right? Then as the perceived value should be not only for the products and services, it should be that they need you worst than the really think.

I was taught long ago that presentation and perceived value is everything. So how much research have you done on that businesses you going after or the competition in the same industry before attempting to make contact with your prospect. Or are you walking in to the business and asking is the owner available though you have not set an appointment much less reseached to see if they qualify for your time? That is also a determining factor concerning your closing ratios.

Now how do I know this its really simple. For those of use that are old enough to remember the abusive telemarketers who would call are until 9 pm at night (before Caller ID). Well remember it wasn't so bad at first, but then a few years later it became annoying to say the least. It was intrusive and that is how most business owners feel when a bright sales person comes unannounced or tries to sell the guy. Don't be like the thousand before you that have tired to sell them SEO and Websites and Social Media.

Their firewalls are up and don't have the time or the patients for another 30 minute to an hours pitch on the latest greatest. Take what you have discover from the business owner and customize are really long term strategy for bring them more business.

By laying out a phase block plan of action of implementation this will surely provide your client with a better visual of how you will grow his business through mobile marketing.
This is just one of the major ways of how you distinguish yourself as the expert and not a fly by night.

This way you can educate them in such a way and make them feel like a part of this magical process, that when the time comes to present price it becomes miniscule in comparison to the value of the marketing strategy. Just make sure that your numbers are realistic and that you leave room to over deliver. You will be their hero.

Creating a mobile website that can deliver all aspects of the marketing strategy is a task as well, but not impossible. Is there a mobile site that delivers the needs of all clients, but yet provide us as mobile consultants the leverage to have a long term business relationship with each and every client with monthly service fees that would allow us to live a comfortable lifestyle???

Give me your thoughts and more will be revealed as to whether a mobile website can be created or really does exist right now.

    Warriors United Always!

Have a Pleasant, Positive, and Properous Life!
