A little secret: Your best paying clients are sitting on page 2-5 of google

Now that i'm doing the offline gig full-time, i'm really stumbling upon marketing efforts that i never considered when i was doing the 9-5.

I guess i have more time to just 'think' about things logically.

Well to those struggling to find new clients, let me tell you something...big hint here****............PAGE 2-5 OF GOOGLE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!

What if you google 'house painter denver' and check out the first page. Big deal, those companies are already on page 1. But go to page 2-5 and those are great prospects and here is why:

1) they obviously are doing 'ok' seo because they arent far off from page 1.

2) they wont be that hard to get up to page 1 because they have a decent ranking. (remember, your warrior forum knowledge is 75,000 times more than they know).

3) you can get names and easily target them with different pitches: ie "you are so close to page 1, but page 3 gets no clicks."

Okay so not trying to fool anyone here into thinking this is an easy sure-fire way to get 10 clients a day. There is definitely a method to the madness and some gamemanship involved. Gotta play to their egos and to their competition on page 1.

But if you really just sit and think about it, these are great prospects. I have perfected my pitch (at least i think so ) and am getting nice responses to emails and phone calls.

Keep it up!! The more you do, the harder you work, the more ideas you utilize........the more you extend yourself and separate from the competiton!

Thanks for sharing this but most of the people offering SEO are already targeting business on 2-5-7 pages because going for those in 1st page it's just foolish.
I think all of us would like to know some tips about the mailing and call part.At least i would like to know if you can share some insights about the emails you send.

Plenty people here want to work with businesses that are not in their country cause either in their country business are paying close to nothing for what we can do, either they are not good to face-to-face meetings, or they just simply would like to work from their home.

Can you share some more details with us?
I'm interested in the emails mainly cause the phone scripts can be blended after the emails if they are that good

    Thanks,
    Adrian

That is exactly what I keep trying to say to some people. Lots of people are trying to get new clients from some many places, craigslist, yp.com, you name it!

Google delivers perfect leads if you just pay attention! This is why I created my own tool and forgot the rest!

Why are the some of the best clients on Google page 2-5? Because many of them have some semblance of what it means to have an online presence. Many of them have attempted or are still attempting to get ranked higher and have dedicated either time or money or even both to achieving higher rankings.

    Jeremy,

If you don't mind me asking, what is your average conversion rate when emailing these prospects? 10 emails to close a sale? 20? 50?

How about the conversion rate for calls?

We use to do this 5-6 years ago to get clients. Funny thing is, it still works. Businesses still want to rank on the first page. Either their site is old and it just ranks naturally and they have no clue OR they have an incompetent SEO team not working it.

My suggestion is to go after niches that aren't as popular as what everyone else is going. Local businesses are great (roofers, electricians, plumbers...), but larger companies are typically much easier to work with and will pay a lot more money. Go after niches, verticals and industries where SEO plays an important role, but the business owners might be "good 'ol boys" and not know how to "use this fangled internat thang".

Believe it or not, a lot of people dont target these businesses. A lot of people use fancy lists or the yellowpages.

And without giving away the exact things I do and say (it varies), the most important thing I can tell you is you must personalize things the majority of the time.

So must research and get contact name, page # they are on, competition. And when you call "whos in charge of the website? is it john?" Then 'john i noticed you guys have a nice site but its only on page 4 of google. there are 400 searches a month for your services, unfortunatlely page 4 gets none of that traffic. perhaps i can show you a few guys to get some of this traffic!"

If you email, same thing. Subject: "John, noticed the site is on page 4"

You cant just expect to email 500 business with a generic "hello, i noticed you arent on page 1."

There is a mass email strategy thats effective, and i use it, but generally you offer something for free on the front end to get their business.

When sending out the very very specific emails with contact name, etc that is only sent to one business and talks just about them, i would say you can get 1-2 solid appointments for every 30-50 you send. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. thats just appointments. i always get replies and conversations that drag on where eventually they may or may not become a client.

phone calls are a little better but roughly the same. so if you send out a 100 highly targeted and specific emails, you would perhaps lock down 3-5 appointments. This takes time, but could be outsourced.

Well with the way the internet is, i think seo will always be an issue for businesses. The landscape will change, but its not something yet where all businesses know what it is and how it works. I agree big businesses can be good prospects, but 6 or under employees are solid also because they are easy to talk to. Dont have to jump through hoops to reach decision maker.

LOL yes ive tried it, thats why i wrote the post. My very first client when i opened my company was a business that was on page 10 of google. Called him, told him he was on page 10, told him he had a nice site but no one would ever see it, we met, met again, eventually did a $200/mo deal.

If you sent 1000 in 2 weeks, were they all personalized with a contact name and specific page rankings?

or was it just generic stuff to the same business? makes a big difference.

Regardless, if you got 2 new clients in 2 weeks, thats nothing to sneeze about. you are on pace for 52 new clients in a single year. would be a pretty nice business....

Thanks for the motivation, there are so many strategies and tactics, it's hard to know which to use and which are a waste of time and where to get started... paralysis of analysis. I go through it every day, but you make a good point, just keep going.

I know where your coming from but you've just got to run with whatever strategy you think will work with your particular situation. don't ponder it or second guess the outcome - just do it and keep an eye on the results. Even a half assed attempt will get better results than just thinking about it!

I agree! Those on pages 3-5 are really our ideal clients. They have some sort of website, and care about having some online presence, but need that extra little push to get to the top. Thanks, Jeremy!

Thanks for reminding offline marketers where the best source of clients are. As a matter of fact this has been mentioned many times before.

If you are new to offline marketing - take note of the information that is presented in these forums. You can learn a lot.

Something else that was mentioned bares repeating. Its a numbers game, and you will have to send out a lot of email, but can be worth it, even if you only get one.
