Time to give back - go make some money - NO INTERNET REQUIRED (well, except maybe email)

1. Make up a nice flyer advertising your service as a "School Supply Source - Home Delivered." Go to a nice, upscale part of your area (houses - $250K - and up.) Go hang these flyers on the door. It needs to, in a creative and stand out way, advertise that you will go purchase the entire amount of school supplies from Wal-Mart or other discount location (maybe online,) for a flat fee of $29-$39 per household. It's a winner with multiple children per household. Simply have the customer fax/email you the list of EXACTLY what they need. List an exact deadline to get the list emailed to you, and then, also list a date and a specific time that you will be in their neighborhood to drop off supplies and collect payment.

2. After the emails start pouring in, (because, in all legitimate concerns, the higher the income bracket, the higher the chance they will want to do this - it's a convenience.)

3. Go rent the appropriate sized box truck from U-Haul.

4. Go at 2 a.m. Saturday Morning and purchase everything requested - it may take a few hours, but you will be one of the new and the proud shopping at Wal-Mart at 2 a.m.

5. Take the box truck to the neighborhood later that same day between 9-12 or whatever time you lay out. Collect the money.

So, just think about this for a second. Let's say you get 100 houses in the same sub division/neighborhood to do it. Let's say you charge $29 per house (though I think you could just as easily charge $39 in nicer areas.) The cost for renting that box truck for 24 hours could be no more than $200-$300. You may have a total of $50 in fuel costs.

For a total of no more than 10 hours invested, anyone that does this could EASILY profit $2,000!

I hope you all make it work! Share your success stories!

Jeremy

This idea goes toward what others have been saying before, go after the people who already have money. A lot of people try to target their businesses at people who are looking for discounts or bargains. Getting money out of these people is like squeezing water from a rock.

Instead of going after someone who thinks that $29.00 is something to think about, go after the people for whom $29.00 is almost pocket change.

Good point. You got me thinking about using that logic in niche marketing.

Interesting idea Jeremy. Have you done this before? What were your results? How many flyers did you pass out? Do you have an example of your flyer?

Don't have any examples. Really just designed the particulars this morning on the way into the office.

In my area, there are 2 very nice sub divisions I would do this in - these are moderately upscale. (However, I don't know if they allow doorhanging.) I am sure there are more...in fact..while I am writing this...I remember a third one right across the street.

I imagine that I would only need to pass out a few hundred. It may fall flat, but, failure is worth an option.

I don't know if I want to do that, as I'd have to do a LOT of walking to cover these 2 or 3 subdivisions, and it's HOT outside. However, I COULD hire someone to go do it all for $100 or so.

I could get a very nice flyer made on Fiverr, I am sure.

One detraction was made is that most of these kids don't go to public schools, and may need more higher scale things that would not be found at Wal-Mart. I could probably charge more, and do multiple stores, but, I'd be only interested in doing Wal-Mart. I imagine that somewhere here in the US are families that still make good money, yet their kids go to public schools.

Now days alot of teachers send home with the kids a list of supplies needed for the school year. If you could grab a few of these lists, you could really focus your dollars to what is needed and not purchase stuff that the student will not need or use.

Also where my sister teaches, the teachers sent their lists to a local business where they assemble the supplies in a bag and the student comes into the store and tells them who their teacher is and they get the appropriate bag.

This is the first time I have seen an offline thread that has nothing to do with an internet product, so this is true "Offline" marketing.

Offline, there really are no limits, only I would probably charge more like $50 or $60.00

Also instead of spending 2-$300 on a truck, I might just pay somebody 80 bucks to drive me around for a day who owned a van or something.

The idea behind this to me is "services".

In what we call "Big Brick" Neighborhoods, or even "Medium" brick neighborhoods... People really do buy services.

It costs me a hundred bucks per week to have my lawn mowed, and I do it, because it saves me the hassle of having one more thing on my mind that gets in the way of being creative...Everyone on my block practically pays this guy, he does 3-4 lawns per day LTERALLY...

Can you imagine a lawn mowing business doing 2k per week just on ONE BLOCK?

Services. Now, this here idea you have is only good for a couple of weeks out of the year... But to me it represents something bigger "Offline Services".

There are a TON of them.

Heck, honestly, no one has offered but I would probably pay someone to plant flowers and things like that too... Im the only guy on my block who doesnt have a bunch of flowers. If someone pointed that out to me and said "Hey your neighbors all have flowers and you dont, you should help them and get some flowers out here... For a hundred bucks I will take a few hours and line your yard with flowers".

That would make sense to me. Surely I want to do my part to keep the neighborhood nice. Especially if he had some illustrations of different arrangements he could put together...that I could choose from, and suggesstions...

There are a ton of services people appreciate, and it sounds vey "lazy" for a person to pay others to do these things... But its not, its how we MAKE MONEY... by staying in the creative zone, and keeping blinders on and having everything that distracts us taken out of the equasion so we can focus.

That guy mowing my lawn probably helps me make twice what I pay him each week.

He aint no slave either, this dude is raking it in and getting a tan in the process! He drives like a 50k truck with a matching trailor... He sure isnt hurting, thats for sure.

I would expand on this idea Jeremy, it would be cool to have a list of "offline" services that could easily make money at the drop of a hat.

Good inspirational stuff here. This is the kind of stuff that will make a person money , if they feel overwhelmed with all the technical info needed to operate online in alot of opportunities. This is something where one could literally walk down the street and come back with cash today.

I had thought about that, but, I don't have a place to store these things. The beauty my plan - I get the truck on a Friday afternoon, (FOR $29.95 - NOT $300) and then, go shopping at 2 a.m., get it all done by5, go home, sleep for 2 hours, get to the sub division by 9, and have it all sold by 12. Anything left over, go refund, and call it a day.

Well, it's good you ask that question. It goes without saying that when you start school, you're going to need pencils, pens, crayons, stationary, etc. However - people don't get that stuff during the summer - they wait until the list comes out the week school starts.

Amazing. My parents were the same way, and I'll probably be the same way as well.

Well sounds like a good idea. But I want to be in your school district if you can buy all your supply's for under 39.99.

My daughter is going to the 1st grade, and we bought ALMOST all her supply's. Total it was about $100. We still got a few more things to pick up, but we are waiting for better sales.

No, what I meant was - $29-$39 would be my mark up for going and getting the school supplies, and then bringing them to their neighborhood. I would market this service to upscale neighborhoods.

This sounds like a great idea, and it just might work, but....

if you have kids, you know that they actually LOVE going to the store and getting all of their school supplies for the new year. At least my kids do. Its kind of a ritual every August when they start getting it in their minds that school is just around the corner. Somehow having someone else go and pick out everything for them just isn't the same. Kind of like someone $29 to go trick or treating for your kids on Halloween.

During the school year I might consider paying someone to do the grocery shopping though. Its the busy times during the school year that families need the drudgery chores done for them - when they don't have time to do it themselves.

Also, unless you have actually DONE this, its really just an idea. There are millions of ideas that sound great until you actually test them to see if they will work. I have doubts on whether you'll get 100 families to pay you $29 for this, but you never know. If someone tries this out, let us know here in this thread how it goes.

    Really intriguing idea.

When you try this you may figure out another more profitable business model to pursue, because you will be getting some face time with your clients. They may have a more pressing need that you can fulfill.

  • Interesting idea... I would be worried about getting paid and not getting stood up. I might do this with a friend just to say I did. Except, I'll tell them it's $29 upfront on a credit card or $49 in person.

Nice idea you got there Jeremy, this would help to those who doesn't spent most of their time in front of their computer. But on the contrary, this would be of very help to those who doesn't have kids yet since when you already have kids, there will be shortage of your time because family comes first before anything else, right. And would probably left some work unfinished or unattended because of your time allocated for the kids.
But your idea is very helpful, will try to share this to my friend who doesn't have much time in front of a computer.

Well, I don't have an ability to collect with a credit card....so, I'd front the money. I got a good, healthy emergency fund (thanks, Dave Ramsey) and whatever wasn't used, I could refund.

Also, I could get the Walmart Credit Card (You didn't hear that, Dave Ramsey,) and pay it off the next day or whatever. No interest, no fees!
