Is SEO Losing Its Importance?

This was a question that was asked to me earlier, and I wanted to see if any of you wanted to weigh in on it. Do you feel that SEO (as in "get you on the first page of Google in 30 days" type thing) is going to lose its importance in the next few years as Google and other search engines begin to stop focusing on page rank? And if so, what do you think people should be now starting to focus on in their marking? (Mobile!)

Feel free to comment on this.

I would have to agree with macalixter on that one, my reasoning being what happened with the last google update.

I'm thinking that your pointing to how google has stopped ranking pages on their search engine based completely on their PR. But, you must see what they've been doing instead. Now they are ranking pages mainly by the content whether the content is unique and useful.

This fact just tells me that google and other search engines are probably going to start basing their rankings more on on-page SEO than off-page like they have in the past.

That doesn't mean that off-page SEO is any less important if you want google and the other search engine spiders to find your page you have to have backlink's. Backlink's are always going to play a part in SEO.

Though I have a feeling that the backlink's that are going to matter the most is soon going to be the naturally spreading and growing backlink's not the article directory backlink's and such.

True. I know SEO is more than just off page work. I think that the quality of the backlinks are going to be more important soon.

I 100% agree. But to go one step further I think that this is already the most important offsite factor and that is the reason so many that have always done the same sort of link building (fashionable 5 years ago) are starting to see a significant drop in their SERPS ranking. I literally build approximately 28 links a month to my website in a competitive finance niche and while I am only PR1 I am No 2 (pushing for Number 1) in Google. Also by quality I do not mean significant page rank, just relevant, well written content on blogs also relevant to my niche.

I agree with suburbanhype, SEO is still in the mix but sources such as backlinking will eventually take over.

No def not! Agree with the above two posters about back-linking but you should never skimp on working on the optimization of your page.

Think SEM - paid search - is starting to rise in popularity though... you get immediate results but the end quality of the results is not at the par of SEO

I think you will have both parts remaining the same for a while. PR may not have anything to do with the way you rank in the SERPs but it still plays into back link rankings. The old ways of SEO may be going away, but it will never go away. The only way that this was happens is if all of the search engines move to a completely paid setup. I never see that happening since at that point you will not me giving customers what they want, only what the business want to give you.

I think it's better to keep doing good SEO and backlinking, neither is going to be losing relevance any time soon...in my humble opinion.

No SEO will never dies..but working strategiesc will change. If You are thinking that latest panda update is decreasing importance of SEO than you may be wrong. Google is just removing low quality websites because Google wants to serve users with more relevent results.

Your clients don't give a rats ass about being on the first page of Google! They want results!!! A lot of "Offline Consultants" get people first page rankings for keyword phrases that get little or no traffic and then tell the business owner "Aint this great you're on the first page of Google." The business owner then want's to know why his phone aint ringin. I've laid out my keyword research method here Keyword Research For Local SEO.
