Using An iPad On Sales Calls?

Was curious to know if anyone has had much success using their iPad or similar device when meeting with clients. I do mobile marketing, website development, SEO, etc., and am considering buying one.
If so, how do you use it?

I use it for my day job. Great tool. Best tool is PDF Expert & a fillable pdf where you can grab signatures on the spot.

I use it to show websites, do research, and just interact with the client as well.

I'm planning on getting one or one of the droid tablets. I need it to show presentations, mind maps, videos, web sites, as well as digital forms and digital note taking (via writing on the screen).

I know the iPad can do all of this. I'm not too sure about the droids.

Anyway, even though I have no scientific proof to back this up, I think having a tablet differentiates you from others and gives an advantage when trying to sell web/internet strategies.

      Just my opinion

      YMMV

      Norbi,
Great idea about the fillable pdf to grab signatures on the spot. You're talking signing contracts, right?

If he's not talking about contracts you just came up with a great idea. You can also sell it as a "green business" practice going digital with as much as you can.

Yes. You can use PDFEscape.com to create your fillable form, grab yourself PDFExpert app from the store, and voila you can grab signatures for contracts.

If you don't pick it up a stylus pen, I find it actually eases signing documents by saying simply "Don't worry, everyones signature looks horrible." That usually gets a chuckle and eases the signing process.

If I won a free iPad then I would probably use it.

But honestly if you are going to spend the money, you are better off getting an 11" Macbook Air for not much more.

I just picked one up and they are amazing! You can do so much more and they are freaking powerful!

When selling "Mobile Websites" (or selling anything)....I like to demonstrate to my potential clients....what the "Target Market" is using.

With what I'm doing...I am targeting "Tourists". My clients are restaurants, gift shops and realtors.

When I demonstrate to one of these potential clients....I "pretend" that I'm a "Tourist" walking into a local motel. Tourists, for the most part, are NOT carrying "I-Pads" with them. They probably have a SmartPhone or Android.

So....you can go up to Ebay and get El-Cheapo phones (I did) and....instead of signing up for a TWO YEAR program for $84 (or more) a month....go to www.VirginMobile.com and sign up for $25 a Month "PAY-AS-YOU-GO". This lets you continue for as long as YOU want and quit at any time without penalty!

Dr Dan, if I wasn't trying to keep expenses down, I'd seriously consider getting one too. Looks awesome. But there's still that Flash issue....

I use my Acer Iconia Tab 500 Android tablet as it plays flash and a lot more user friendly for demonstrations than my Ipad.

I also like that I can add ram for any additional storage and actually like the weight.

Good point, Quentin. The ability to play Flash is a decided advantage over the iPad...and I don't see that changing any time soon with Apple.
Curious, do you also work in a demo with a smart phone in the same call, especially if you are selling a mobile website or sms, or do you just use the Iconia for the entire meeting?

Also, just watched the video link you posted. How do you get around the fact that the Iconia is WiFi only?

I just recently bought an ipad exactly for that reason. I'm the process of creating presentations in keynote to sell my services. I plan to provide mobile websites, SEO, google business places listings etc. I think an ipad or any tablet device would certainly help when prospecting and consulting business owners as I think they would be impressed by the use of technology - after all you will providing/consulting on technical services which most small business owners are probably not aware of or have limited knowledge of themselves..

IMO, I would go with laptop.

As for ipad, your gonna have the flash issue, and I think it just looks bad if your clients site has flash in it, and you cant properly look at in front of them.

As for the the other tablets, its uncomfortable to have one person holding in front of the other person and then trying to hold it in one hand while using the other to touch the screen. And if your gonna prop it up on a table/desk, then you might as well get the laptop with a bigger screen, so it can be viewed easily by you and your client.

Ans since were on this topic anyway, I posted these thread yesterday that will come in handy when visiting clients.

And Ricky, I can't argue that the iPad has a big WOW factor. Thx.

Dr Dan's point is a good one. Be careful not to get too enamored with new stuff. But, there is a 100% bump in price between entry level models of each. You can pick up a 1st gen iPad for around $350 which for a tool for presentations is pretty decent. I like the idea of using the iPad for presentations, it's clean and easy.

I bring my iPad with my to client meetings.

    I also own a Macbook pro that I could bring...but don't.

What do I use it for?
    + Initial Marketing Analysis questions
    + Keynote presentations
+ Search engine research (with the client) on keywords and their competitors
    + Teleprompter for Client Videos
    etc.

Would I pinch pennies with money I couldn't afford to part with to buy an iPad? Nope.

In fact I used the initial payment for one of my two-hour initial prospect meetings to pay for it...making it a write-off anyway.

Nobody "needs" an iPad, but if you can monetize the use of one (to pay for itself), then have at 'er!

    ~Dexx

PS - I also bought the iPad so I can read eBooks and watch marketing (and regular) videos on it more comfortably than on my laptop when in bed or on a couch relaxing etc.

Here is a tip I have used in the past. If the client is going to be spending more than $20 grand a year with you, like mine are, I buy an iPad solely for that meeting and leave it for them. It works for me EVERY TIME! It establishes credibility and shows them that you are all business.

Depending on what you are doing, you can even make it a tool for them. For example, Groupon gives iPod Touch to all their better merchants so they can manage their promotions better (plus run grouponnow)

Not only is going green a great reason but you are also able to carry so many files (presentations, pictures, videos etc) in one organized place! So helpful.

Tuscan I usually start with my droid phone and a qrcode and then when I get in use my pad for more demo and powerpoint.

My droid acts as a hot spot so I can either run off it or use their office internet.

Of course this is not all set in stone. Sometimes I will use their office computer just depends on the situation as I try and keep it lite and low key.

Good to know, Quentin. I like the droid hotspot hook. Tell me, is the droid 3G or 4G, and does provide enough connection speed for your pad to demo efficiently?

Not having flash on an iPad is a benefit. Use it!

What a powerful way to show a prospect that his a flash site that they simply do not exist to iPad, iPhone and Mac users. Remind them that Apple is one of the most successful companies out there with millions of users.

Having no flash on such a device is a benefit.

The only Apple devices that cannot "see" flash are those that use iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch).

All Mac computers both desktop and laptops can use flash.

FWIW flash is cpu intensive (which leads to declines in battery life). As devices become more mobile it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see more platforms abandon it or for something better to take its place.

I would have to agree. I try to convince clients NOT to have flash on their sites for that reason. Sites with flash alienate a large group of people.

Thanks for clarifying that Mac supports flash.

HTML5 can do most of what flash can do.
