Offline marketing working in a medium-developed country.

Hi there,

My name is Marcel and I'm from Republic of Moldova.

As I live in a small country in the Europe our online local search is pretty cheesy, however, there are searches like restaurants in Chisinau (our capital), insurance in Chisinau , etc. (of course in romanian, i just translated to make it clear) which get a pretty decent number of searches ~ 500-1000/month. The competition is pretty low for this kind of kw and I think I will be able to beat the competition from the 1st page which mostly consists of local direcory listings like All Moldova Portal: Information on Moldovan enterprises

My qs is: How do u think I should approach small business in getting a website for them? I have ideas like building a site in a niche => getting in front of their door and let them know i've built a 3 page site that may be their own for a fee of ~300$ + a Free Logo Design and Google Optimisation. Is it somehow right my strategy?

I also think to offer mobile and sms services for restaurants but for now I want to make website design and to push up a bit businesses' online presence.

For companies that have already a website I would like to go with a FREE video showcasing their businesses ( animoto style) and then to upsell new services.

Phew. That is all for now I think. My hardest struggles here are:

1. people still dont search online for services in Moldova. (low number)
2. local business are somehow "scared" and not ready to pay for this
3. I am afraid not to came out with big prices like I saw here (300-100$ for web design) as most business are not really educated and dont care about their online reputation.

Some things I could add: I've been in a JV w/ someone from the US but we've been "lagging" for some time, and now as I am entering new city and starting university I would like to get myself in the offline marketing world here in Chisinau, R. of Moldova.

I have read a lot of threads during a year (for setting up my US experiment) and have each one that has value bookmarked but I am rejected by the though that it will not work here.

Thanks, Marcel

Hope 2 hear from ya soon guys who have been in a same situation and I'm waiting to see what worked for you.

Long letter, sorry ,

    Hi Marcel

Internet penetration in Moldova is only at 32%. I'm in Ireland where it's at 67% and local search volumes are still quite small but growing very rapidy. This has only happened in the last year or so. I think Moldova will probably catch up very rapidly - internet trends are like that. I'll bet you'll see very significant growth in your market in the next two years.

In the meantime, why don't you do some market research in your target market? Find out what internet related services your potential clients want - and then offer them. Call them on the phone or in person and say that you're not selling anything - ask them to give you 15 minutes to go through a questionnaire and use the results to develop your offering.

      Hi Colm,

Yes. It is true that our online world is growing here, although we are in the top 10 of the countries with a higher connection speed Quite interesting

You mean by questionnaire to ask general business questions or just web-related? I know It will be hard for me to position myself as a marketing consultant not as a internet one. However, I've read some stuff about past customer reactivation, limited offers, call to action, buying motivators, etc.

      Thx, Marcel

You keep asking what service to offer but the only way to know the answer is to see what your prospects want OR what's hot with the competition. Right now, here, interest in FB fanpages is big and SMS marketing seems to be trending. I just don't know anything about your market so I can't advise you. Sorry.
