Let's brainstorm some thoughts about reviews...

G'day Warriors,

Can we mastermind a bit in this thread about what actions or systems businesses can take that would help to cause customers to get in their car, go home, and desire/remember to leave reviews for offline businesses?

To be clear, I understand the obvious triggers people leave reviews like "Great customer service" or "Horrid experience" etc. Those are clear drivers for leaving reviews.

But let's drill down a level or two deeper and brainstorm a couple of questions and see what we come up with collectively.

Granted there will be variables by industry, but I'm convinced there are more similarities, at least principally speaking, on what actions a business owner can take to improve the chances, than differences.

So let's work under a few assumptions...

1. Service/Product was rendered at or above expectations
2. It's an offline business, so it involves people leaving the business and going home to then remember and write a review

So here's the big question summed up:

"What actions or system could a business put in place to encourage a review?"

2 days ago, my wife and I went to Dunkin Donuts drive thru for a couple of coffees. The girl at the window handed me a business card sized hand-out with her name written on it and the card said:

"How was your guest experience today? My name is (girls handwritten name), and I would love to know if I made your day! Please tell me at telldunkin.com! Thank you, see you tomorrow!"

The girl did a good job of explaining what to do. It's not hard to complete. But 48 hours later, I did nothing with it. For me it was primarily that I forgot the card was in my wallet, and never thought twice about it until I pulled it out today.

Thanks to social media conditioning and user generated content sites, reviews are the most influential credibility forming asset.

So let's brainstorm...

"What actions or systems could a business put in place to encourage an online review?"

Thanks in advance!

Will

Create a QR code that lands people on the businesses google places page and make a call to action to give feedback about their experience.

    Place it throughout the store.

I like that idea as well as having a contest giveaway or something for those that post a video or status update with a review while they are at the store or shop.

This would work well for those with android and iphones that like to do these things already.

Thanks Russ. Just curious, have you seen any benchmark traction with QR in the offline space? Obviously you won't lose reviews, only gain, but I'm curious if the consumer adoption has been analyzed for reviews?

2ndly, just to clarify, your thought is the customer would scan it right there while being in the store on their mobile?

I'm working on test right now actually leveraging the "mysteriousness" of the codes having a client ask the customer if they've ever seen these. If the response is "no" to provide code/instructions on a 3"x3" flyer and scan it when they get home for a message from the owner. And just give the feeling that it's cool new technology to add the mystique to the end user.
(my hope is to play on the curiosity of QR and I'm working on some Augmented Reality to embed. All lab work right now though.

We'll see how it goes, and I'm sure the message will have to be tweaked and maybe even landing page.

For hard goods, include a reply card, or even a web URL within the package, where people can be taken to a landing page to submit their reviews.

Bribe/bonus them with a coupon on next order.

Just ask them. I've noticed a lot of businesses try to think up all kinds of complicated incentives to get reviews, but many of those never tried having the person who helped the customer say: "Thank you for your business, if you don't mind could you please go to XXX.com and leave your feedback. It is how I am evaluated so it would really help me out."

Yep. Absolutely on this one. Making it a bit personal from the "human" side of the business. (but also with an incentive)

      Thanks,

Ask them to send a txt with their review to get a free coffee with their next donut.

Txt Donut to 1234 followed by your review to get a mobile coupon for a free coffee with your next order of $10 or more.

    Or something like that.

They Donut store gets a review and a cell number to follow up with. 2 bangs for their buck :-)

      Thanks for the above.

So this brings up a big point. Let's say this route works well, you have real reviews, from real customers. How do we get these to google places so we can make a place page impact?

Any thoughts that keep it on the up and up?

      Thanks

    Yeah,

They could land on a video message from the owner with a link to the places page below the video. They tap the link and arrive at the places page, now that Google has the MONSTER review button right at the top it will be easy for them to leave a review.

And the incentive is, the coupons you have in your places page. You could also get the url for your coupon and link it to a QR code and put it on the landing page also.

PS: Don't forget to use a URL shortener for all your QR codes. One that tracks preferably.
