Here is a peak at what augmented reality can do.

As technology improves this will be more favorable than the standard qr code.

I'm currently part of a beta test that allows me to create AR codes. So far so good.

      @ the dealmaker

Looks neat and all, but they could do so much more with that technology. The demographic of people who are deeply interested in the history of things, let alone interested enough in something that it will hold their attention for longer than 5 minutes while they load up the app, get it pointed at the thing, and then sift through the other meaningless tags, is a very small demographic. I believe they could take that technology in a very different direction than from "Tell cool stories", something that would lead it to be more than a flash in the pan.

I'll agree with your observation LionHeart, but this looks like the tip of an iceberg to me...(might kill tour guides though... ) it will just take creativity to hash this app out.
Edison thought the phonograph would be cool to use to record peoples voices and play them back after they were dead...thank god somebody came up with a better use for that thing!...

I'm sure something cool will eventually come out of this, hopefully something like pointing it at clothes in a store window and seeing the price, ect... ect.

          You're absolutely right.

See that's just it. It's like dazedanconfused said. This is just the tip of the iceburg.

What you will see coming out in the future using AR technology will be quite amazing.

Look past what it's currently being used for and look at what it represents.

How things will communicate with you.

Right now it's cell phones but imagine other objects equipped with this technology that allows it to communicate with other objects within it's surroundings to provide you with more real time info that's both relevant and useful for where you are at - at that very moment.

Imagine that you're driving down the street and you car prompts you to travel in a different direction. Why? Because a shooting has just happened a few blocks up ahead and the car that went past the scene has communicated that info back to your car. It's real time. Faster than anything else you have available to warn you.

          That's the final goal.

          A hyper-interactive world.

I'd read about AR and google goggles before, but had never see it quite presented this way...a real next step trip!
As simple as it is, just the thumbs up / down example would blow most people in my sector away...
I can see where this may be bypassing QR more sooner than later...

@thedealmaker - keep us posted on the Tagwhat beta testing, eh mate? Fascinating stuff!

bar code is 1D - QR is 2D - AR is 3D...could there a 4d in our future? (AI ?)

Pretty soon your smart phone will be saying - "Hey, Bob - I can hear your stomach growling, and since I know you like Tandoori, and there's a good place right around the corner...want to see the menu?"

AR codes are cool and all, but just like QR codes, they are having a tough time to bring them to the mainstream where average everyday people will actually use them in real life.

I could see them being a step up from QR codes in the future, but that will be probably about 2-3 years from now though.

eyesocialize I don't have enough messages yet to pm you so I'll put the info here in the forum.

One of the public beta's that I'm in is currently closed.

But it's not all bad news.

I have another company upon which I'm involved with that still has a public beta.

      They're called daqri.

      Here's the link:

      https://daqri.com/accounts/signup/

Once inside you can build up to 3 codes using their technology until the roll out the full site.
