I can't put a flyer THERE can I?

Whenever I talk to people about the importance of marketing their off line consulting business, the conversation normally steers toward fliers at some point.*

And why not? They're generally low cost ways to get your message in front of the kind of people who would pay to know more about you and what you have to offer.*

But there in lies the problem - with a limited budget (and therefore a limited number of flyers to hand out), how do you ensure your marketing efforts are effective?

People normally try and hand flyers out, or drop them through letterboxes. The problem with that is that most of them go in the bin, and so you're spending a lot of money on paper that's not going to take your message anywhere.*

But here's an idea I stumbled across this week;

I missed a parcel drop at home and had to go to our post depot to collect. As I approached the counter, I noticed a bunch of flyers sat on my side of the glass. As the lady went out back to get my parcel, I read one of the flyers. It was for a local person who makes speciality cakes (think Ace of Cakes only nowhere near as cool!) It was a neat flyer - I actually took one away with me for my sister to look at (she makes cupcakes)

When the lady returned with my parcel, I asked her what I'd have to do to be able to put my flyer there.*

"Just ask me nicely" was her response.*

Turned out the only reason the cake person got their flyer in there was because they'd asked a question nobody else bothered to ask!

Then it got me thinking. How often do business owners miss a delivery and have to go pick a parcel up? Fairly often in small companies, especially ones that don't have a reception or regularly work away from the office (mobile salon, driving instructors, consultants, construction etc)

So I returned the next day with my flyers, which now have pride of place next to the cake ones. I'm confident I will get some calls from them.*

But that's not all. I then went out to the local DHL, CityLink, UPS etc etc and again, I just asked the question. The friendlier you are the better, and I found it particularly effective to tell the person that they'd be doing me a HUGE favour. People like doing favours!

Think about where you could do this in your town. Then just give it a go!

  • I"m not sure if the US postal offices are allowed to do that - I've never seen flyers...(maybe no one ever thought of it!) but it would certainly not hurt to find out!

Great idea! I had never even thought of this. This is "niche" marketing at its finest.

That's fair enough if US rules prohibit you. As you say, doesn't hurt to ask!

All I know is that I live in a town of some 60,000 people and that's the only place you go to if you miss a royal mail parcel drop. I then went and did the same in the town 7 miles from here (80,000 people in the town) - if it turns out to be successful I would consider going further.

I think the key thing to remember is that often there are a lot of 'hidden opportunities' that will remain hidden because nobody thinks to ask. Worst that can happen is you get told 'no'!

Some places other than a Post office might work too for this - like postal annex, ups, fed-ex ? I know of some post office box places that do shipping as well...maybe offer a perk for each new client they bring in...?
After all, many small businesses and drop-shippers use a PO box for address...?

Very true - You're only really limited by your imagination with this.

Update: They've only been 'on show' for a little under a week now and I've had a couple of really positive calls. I think the format of the flyers is important too - You've got to grab business owner's attention and get them thinking.

I've done that, and people are generally receptive to letting you leave some flyers.

The downside is that the old "pile 'o flyers" has never resulted in a lead...

There are much more effective ways to promote.

Totally agree - The more pro-active you are the better. People knock cold calling but if you do it enough it works.

I've got my core methods that have always worked and will continue to work, but I like to try something new every now and then. This has for me, so far at least, been cost effective. We'll see how it stands in a month or so,

That's great for UK. Wouldn't fly in the US, though. However, you can test out putting them on the counters where the mail boxes are. Might get a few hours visibility and into the hands of interested prospects.

I too believe in the power of fliers, especially for local biz with an immediate market within 1-2 miles. Cheap, cheap, cheap and so easy you don't need a marketer to do it for you.
