Small local business - Showing results

7 replies
I'm new to this game. I've read a ton, but not a lot of actual experience. I'm making mobile sites, regular sites, and selling them like hotcakes. All to local businesses. Auto body, plumbers,restaurants,etc. I get that part, and its not a hard sell.

My question is this: I have a local guy: one-man car repair business. He is good, and he's cheap. I have used him personally a bit, and been very satisfied. He started out advertising only on Craigslist, then started renting space, and is now advertising in all of the local classifieds. Roughly $200 per month, and isn't seeing much work from it.

In a minute I can get him to sign on with me, and offer to "take over his advertising". I can build and optimize his site/mobile site (up-front fee), and sell letting me bring him customers. I can put that site on page one of Google without much problem. I can set up his places listing, put him on FB, Twitter, Hotfrog, LinkedIn, etc. I'll put a nice squeeze page on the front of his site, and I'll manage it all.

In a small local business like this though (town is 30K people, keyword searches somewhere in the 20-100 range) how do I drive people in the door and rationalize him spending his advertising budget with me? SMS isn't going to work, it just isn't that sort of business. Like I said, he would sign with me tomorrow. I still need to be able to deliver.

Thoughts? Anyone doing the monthly "Marketing guy" thing with small local businesses? What are you doing to get results? Thanks in advance...

    hey creekchub,
    Have you considered any of these?

    -mobile banner ads -(can target a local area) 'click to call and click to map' specifically could work.
    -google adwords - (can be succesful if done right) Look up Ali Khan for this, he's a pro, Send them to a contact page on his website prehaps.
    - QR codes - only really if there are other companies in the area using them then you know there is some success using qr codes, just cover every paper based advertising with them, flyers, posters etc.

    Would you be able to broaden his market further afield of his 30k village?

      Could you elaborate on this one? Banner ads displayed on his site, or...?

      And yes, getting outside of the 30K town isn't a problem. There are similar sized towns in all directions, within 8-10 miles, which would be included in my definition of "local".

      I'm still building my knowledge about Adwords, but will definitely be throwing it into the mix. QR codes haven't really caught on here. I'm planning to throw in a freebie to put on business cards, etc. - more for my education than anything. I want to track it and see what sort of results he gets, if any.

      I've got the mobile web site / web site building and selling thing down. I just want to be able to offer more, and set myself up for recurring monthly fees. I've got to be able to earn them though, or I won't do it.

      Thanks for the input...

    Hi Creek,

    The short answer is that yes, it works.

    I've had good experience helping these small business owners with SEO first (assuming they have a website) and getting their phone to ring. Once that happens and their business starts growing, they are receptive to additional services because they will have additional income and cash flow. Getting them fixed up with the local listings is also a good move and showing them how to have their satisfied customers leave reviews for them will help too.

    Everything I said above is contingent on knowing and understanding:
    -How much business there is to be had in the area
    -Who his competitors are
    -How his competitors compare to him from a price/quality/value/reputation perspective
    -How competitive the local marketplace is for the same services as provided by your potential client

    Oh, and yes- if he's not highly ranked in local results - get him up there. That will solve most of his problems if local consumers are searching for services that he offers, which it sounds like they are.

    Good luck,

    BBB

    How do you know SMS marketing wont work? How about setting up a list and be able to send customers reminders for maintance, oil changers etc and at the same time a coupon. A lot of people forget about this stuff and once they see the reminder they will remember to come down... I agree with the SEO part first then try to build up a FB and Twitter fan base and offer discounts etc. How is is ranking in Google Places? get him ranked in google places and put some offers there.

      You know, I guess I don't know it won't work. I'm still new to this, and sometimes don't come at it from the right angle. Good ideas, and I think I can make them work.

      Thanks!

        Whenever I've "worked" with an Auto Repair Shop...to help them get more business...I've gone to the "Discount Oil Change".

        One, simple, program is....make up some Business Cards that say;
        ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
        $10 OFF OIL CHANGE!
        Just present this card at:
        Jones Auto, 2310 W. Main
        663-223-7890
        +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
        Place the cards in the small, plastic, card holders and put the card holders next to or in front of the cash register of 5 or 6 local Family Restaurants.

        If he only gets $15 per oil change for 5 qts of oil and a few minutes of his time....I'll betcha he WILL FIND "SOMETHING"....that needs fixing on almost every vehicle.
