Tattoo Shops + SMS Marketing = Perfect. Landed 7 easy clients

Got the idea to call some tattoo shops to offer SMS marketing as they have totally been off my radar since I've began for some reason. I called 49 shops in about an hour. The owners are VERY easy to reach! Talked to 27 owners on the first call. 19 were interested enough to give me their email address.

I sent out an email to the 19. Within the last week and a half, 7 of them have emailed me back with their upfront payment. Just wanted to let you guys know this is a great business to go after, highly untapped, and SMS is perfect for tattoo shops, they have lots of repeat customers.

Cheers.

I've contemplated the idea myself. What sort of promotional stuff are you thinking of running for them?

    Great work!

Interesting idea but I'm kinda lost on how a tattoo shop would use sms. Can you go further in depth on it?

Not sure how tattoo shops work but maybe for appointment reminders? I would like to know this also since I live by the beach and there is TONS down the strip.

They use SMS marketing to build a list like any other business would use it. Things such as coupons, or bring a friend today and they get 50% off types of deals.

They can also build a list very quickly by offering a free tattoo contest. I bet this that this method in conjunction with a small (local) social media campaign would net them some a lot of new customers off the bat, and returning customers that respond to the SMS coupons for tattoos down the road.

That would be my pitch to them.

Sure. The shop will announce the contest. At the counter in the shop they can put out a small cardboard table tent, or special business cards, or a sheet of paper announcing the contest. Hell, they would even get numbers by placing an ad on Craigslist in the Free section. They also announce it to their fans and followers (assuming they have some - which they should already) and they give out their shortcode and keyword for the campaign.

The table tent/business cards/social media pages/whatever else will read something like "Text tattoo to 12345 to enter and win a tattoo valued up to $250!".

Bam! Let the magic happen! They will start getting phone numbers in their list the day that the campaign kicks off. They must follow through of course and deliver on their promise.

They take pictures of the winner and their free tattoo, post it up on Facebook/Twitter, even in-store and repeat this process monthly. Now they are getting new subscribers monthly while building a fat list of targeted people interested in tattoos.

I have not tested this of course, but this is exactly what I would do if I owned a tattoo shop.

Step 1. Kick off SMS & social media campaign

          Step 2. ?????

          Step 3. Profit

Absolutely perfect! This is exactly my plan for the shops I've landed...EXACTLY! They pick a winner once per month to get a free tattoo or whatever and be sure to make it a big deal. FB/TWITTER, signs all over the shop.

As for what to text the customers who join the list. Basic discounts on tattoos, bring a friend and get yours half off, get 2 tattoos this month and get your next one half off, etc.

The special offers you can offer are endless. People who get tattoos, usually will get more in the future so they are perfect to market to through SMS and get them through the door sooner than they imagined to grab the great special offers. I'm very excited to get started with these 7 shops and plan on landing many more shops very soon.

Any one else want to chime in with some ideas, that would be cool!

Most tattoo shop owners always go to the big city tattoo shows, some travel a long way. SMS would be a great way to inform their customers where they are going(insider info) and invite them to attend the show etc. At the show setup a sign with an offer to get people to join the list. Now they artist has an out of town market to work as well as hos market at home.

I think Tattoo shop owners would make real good clients. The tattooist customers spend $$$ nearly every time they come in. If you haven't noticed the customers of tattoo shops are really getting into the full sleeve, half sleeve, full back legs etc.

I posted this in your offline ice breaker WSO thread, but maybe you can answer them here since it would pertain to this market as well. Thanks.

        A few quick questions:

        1. After you get the initial setup fee how long before we start the monthly service fee if say the client has no optins yet and it wouldn't make sense to charge them a monthly fee when there is no list to send to at first. Do you wait the first month to generate as many optins and then at beginning of 2nd month start charging the client once they have built some sort of list or do you wait until they get a certain number of optins (i.e. 50-100) regardless of how long it takes before charging monthly fee?

        2. With the SMS service provider does it allow an auto response message to be sent to each person once they optin...so once they text using the keyword and number do they receive a confirmation message back saying "Thank you for signing up to our VIP CLUB...look for special deals and offers coming your way soon"...or something along those lines? Is your confirmation message similar to this?

The monthly fee starts 30 days after they sign up. It is ultimately their job to get signups and I am just there to give some tips on how they can get sign ups faster.

Yes that is correct and that is almost identical to the confirmation I use.

Hi, great idea but I am just wondering what information exactly you would be sending to the list built with SMS?

Would it just be discounts? How could I market to this niche better with SMS.

    Hi,

Just a few questions from the UK. Recently I have been reading a lot about Mobile Marketing and the use of Short codes. Do the service suppliers charge you for the short codes, and if so how much.

And do the short codes work on a premium rate number? And if they do who keeps the money etc?

Sorry if this has been answered before

The shortcodes come with the SMS provider and in most cases 1 keyword also. The prices to sign up for SMS providers vary. A lot have free trials.

Was there anything special in your email that got such a response?
Could you share the email or any details in it that would help?

If not publicly by PM maybe?

EDIT: I reread your response so you called them first. Not bad, it isnt too hard to get an email and then sell in the email.

Wow, I'm am sooo glad I came across this thread! I just moved to an area that has a ton of Tattoo shops and been wondering what to offer them. Now that I know SMS works can you tell me what you emailed them to get them interested? This is something I want to take action on tomorrow! So it looks like I need to invested in two WSO's Offline Ice Breaker and AffiliateCommander? I guess my question is the same as TWalkers above. I need things broken down to me in baby terms. Did you ask to speak with the owner first. Then ask if they were interested in SMS text messaging to promote their business? Then if they say yes just ask for their email and send them an email about how you would use SMS. What is the going rate to charge for this type of service? Is this a monthly maintenance? Would you have them sign up using something like a PayPal subscription. What SMS service do you use?

Sorry about all the questions! I'm a newb!

Wow thanks for the great feedback in this thread, to the post above, I emailed them the same script inside my ice breaker wso. You don't need affiliate commander for this. Yes that is exactly how the call worked and I charge $250 per month to manage their campaigns. Yes a paypal subscription is perfect! I currently use txt180, looking to move on soon to something else for more options.

    Hello everybody!
I think that sms marketing could be a great deal.. but I've just two questions.

    1) ok I think that, with the sms machine/service, you're able to do a quick Sms broadcast for an event, but.. for appointment? How to do? Is there anyway to connect a digital calendar to the sms service? Otherwise, you have to use check the calendar and then send the sms people-by-people..

    2) if you manage the sms campaign for some companies, you must have a VA to get a holyday.. .. or is preferable to have always a laptop under the arm?

Thank you so much for your input!

With most SMS providers you have the capability to schedule when messages are sent.

This could probably work with almost any store. Could consider: Dentists, Hair Salons, Barbers, etc.

I'd never thought of tattoo shops. Well, I have now added a 2 x month SMS package (my standard was 4 x month), as many businesses, including tattoo shops, don't need to send weekly blasts IMO. Restaurants, clubs, sure, but for many businesses, it'd be overkill. But we can sure provide the service still

That's awesome. So how's the SMS going for the tattoo shops? Are they going well?

You can definitely use sms in any venue, with tattoo shops you could also add a mobile app into the mix and use sms/push notifications to bring on the customers, give them an app and make it $150 a month for updates. Like News. Etc, and then also upsell them on a Mobile website.

I'm really curious as to what your email said. If I send out 19 emails and receive 7 replies WITH PAYMENTS...I'm ecstatic, so I'm really curious as to what was in your email. Think you could post it here or even PM? I'd appreciate it. Thanks
