Is it illegal to send money?

I have had a idea for some time now but I'm not sure if it's legal. If i send people 0,01 $€ etc. i can also use it to advertise my website. Any ideas on this?

It might be considerd bank spam or something..

I really have no idea what you're saying and I would think nobody else can, either.

Perhaps you could be a bit more clear?

I have a bank account and i guess you have one also. In the Netherlands you can send people money if you have a Name, city and bank account number. The idea is to send 0,01 €$ or whatever (the smallest amount) and write the ad/website url in the description for the payment (I'm guessing this is the same in other country's).

This means i have a way to put my ad in front of people for €0,01 and because nobody else (as far I know) does this it can be effective i guess.

How are you going to get a random person's bank account number?

I do remember one marketer sending out $.02 via Paypal as a way to grab attention. But this was to his own customers, not random prospects.

No, I don't think it's illegal... Currency is mailed millions of times per day. I've heard of other offline marketers stapling a dollar to the letter they send their prospects. Anything you can do to stand out from the rest of the joe blows is going to be beneficial, you want them to remember you.

I think what the OP is saying, send people $0.01 via online banking. And leave his website as the reference of the payment.

So when they check over their statement, they will be like "WTF"? and then see the website.

You'd have to be offering something that the general public would want or need for it to be effective though, I would imagine.

i'd say you'd more successful mailing salesletters, taping or attacking a dollar or a gluing one cent coins to the top of the letter if you can tie that in your pitch somehow.

just my two cents - no pun intended

I think you could take it a step further and offer your service for one month for .01 while giving them the .01. It's a good way to get them to take action and more than likely they will continue to use your service.

My first question would be why?

How many people do you think is going to be excited about receiving 0.01. People might click on your link / visit your site just to see what kind of a whack job would send 0.01.

    Thanks for the chuckle!

Oh, it is illegal to send anyone any of your money but me! I'll expect a big bank deposit by the end of the day!

The only reason people will check your website is to find out who is accessing their bank account. Do this, and people will panic. I would if I thought some scam artist was putting money into my account. I'd worry it was part of some scheme to rip me off.

Best case scenario, they'll check your site out of curiosity. But with no reason to do so, or for them to do business with you, I'd give it a miss.

People have been doing this for a very, very long time. There is no problem doing it. In fact, one of the coolest things I saw was a company that gold plated pennies (it is really cheap even with the price of gold today) and sent them out to clients. I know I carried mine for a long time. It was a fun little conversation piece and I talked about that company numerous times after that. If I still remembered the name I would say it now.

I recently had some one send .01 cents to my paypal account. Then I got lots of spam from Paypal saying I have only X days left to claim my money.

I send an email to Paypal informing them that this is a spammer sales tactic and the money was not expected or invited. What they do with the senders Paypal account is up to them but I hope they close the account.

To be honest, if you managed to get hold of my account number/sort code and send me 1p, first thing that would cross my mind is that you are trying some scam.

I don't mean sending 1 cent to a paypal address. I mean a real bank account.

I'm not talking about "random" 1 cent payments. If you have a customer list of lets say 2000 customer s who have made payments with their bank account you already have the bank info.

P.s. I know it might be considerd a bit "unwelcome" thats why i have not tested it and wanted to know if others have experience with this type of marketing.
