Offline marketing for forums

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I was wondering if there are any financially feasible marketing techniques for forums? I guess the main problem I have when I look at marketing techniques that are paid, are that I don't really know if or what the return will be at all. My forum is my hobby, but I do want to make something from it in the long term if I can.

Any thoughts would be great! If someone has experience and can share their views, that would be even better!

You can monetize your forum with banner ads, although those seem to be less and less effective these days.

Another way is to do what WF does... have a paid area that has special content. I personally haven't joined the War Room yet, but I know it is only a matter of time now!

In terms of marketing techniques to get people to your form, I would recommend figuring out exactly what your main "selling point" is-- what valuable information are people going to learn from your forum... then write some good posts and SEO them to get them to show up in Google results. Then when people are browsing for questions on a topic they can come across your forum and hopefully find enough value there that they keep coming back on their own.

To promote forums, there can be schemes for earning while joining it & there can be banner adds etc. Topics selected should be meaningful & knowledge based. Content also matters a lot in this. Registrations can be completed with some attractive policies.
