What would you charge per month for this?

Hey dudes,

Let's say that you have the #1 position in google for the search term "new york city diner" (I just made this up right now) and are going to go to diners in new york city to ask them if they are interested in having their business on the page - how much would you charge them? 500 a month? 1,000 a month? Or does it depend completely on how many searches it gets and how much money it brings in?

Any additional suggestions you have are cool too.

A quick search gave me roughly 12,000 local searches and low competition. With that being said I have a similar site in terms of search volume and competition and charge $500 per month and in a way smaller city. Try to figure out a quick value of a customer, or even ask a diner, most will tell you if you are honest. In NYC with that search volume and competition, I would go around $750. Don't take my word for it as gold...it's just what I would charge.

With that search volume, in that instance (restaurants) you might be able to lock in even more than $750. You have to take into account what kind of money the business can make from your efforts. If a business can make $10,000 from your efforts, they will gladly pay $1000 every month!

Completely agree. It may be worth far more to the business.

Disclaimer: I live far from new york city, so can't know for sure, BUT, I wonder how valuable ranking for that phrase would turn out to be for most diner owners?

NYC is huge, and includes 5 boroughs, wouldn;t most searchers use more specific terms than that? Like, "manhattan east side diner" for instance?...I only ask because I have found to get fees like $500 to $1000 per month from businesses, the rankings must be generating calls/customers and dollars, not just placement on a Google Results page.

The number of searches per month for the keyword your ranking is much less important than the actual number of people who end up going to your page.

Using the example "new york city diner" Google's Keyword Tool shows 12,100 monthly searches, but that is for a broad search-- meaning the number of searches that contain the words "new", "york", "city", and "diner" in any combination and with other words. It greatly inflates what the actual number is. If you change the match type (on the left hand side) to [Exact] and you will see there are only 46 global monthly searches for the exact phrase "new york city diner".

Going off the number of 46 searches a month, that will give you maybe 30 - 35 visitors a month to you site. That low of traffic is pretty much worthless for a restaurant to see an ROI.

Misreading search result numbers in Google's Keyword Tool is a very common mistake amongst internet marketers. It is also something that Offline Marketers should understand when presenting search volumes to clients. Overstating the results by a factor of over 1000 will leave a lot of clients disappointed.

Agreed, no question...if the page don't get PLAY, then the clients won't PAY. The assumption is of course, with that kind of volume, directing them to what they are looking for, and with an industry that features significant profit margins, there should be some profit on the table. IN this case, if you fear charging too much, perhaps setting up separate contact forms/phone numbers to track actual leads may be in order, so as to maximize profit based on ACTUAL results.

Is there a general guideline to follow? Let's say my site gets 3,000 visits a month then 750 dollars a month? How does anyone determine how much to charge a client? Or is it just simply "get the most that they are willing to pay"?

Charging a business is not a science. Without knowing exactly what a customer is worth, and how many customers a business can expect to see from your efforts, it is almost impossible to figure out an exact number. I usually charge what I can. Sometimes there is negotiating, but very little. Find what the market will bear. Also, another way to go is one I did once, let them "rent" the site for free for the first month...see what it does and how it helps the business, but make sure you can keep track. What I did was tie it in with an offer they were already doing and made it only available online. With no advertising that it is available on the site (would defeat the purpose) and see what numbers would print the coupon and redeem.

    My suggestion:

    1. Ask a few people, in a relaxed manner without selling, how much a listing is worth to them.

    2. Take a look at what kind of sales the industries are pulling in

Bonus: Setup a few verticals for your business such as personal 'online coaching' for the business or even an 'upgrade' to a subdomain that gives the business a greater presence on your site with additional pictures, video and more - or a completely new website.

Simple, call businesses that can benefit from that keyword in another major city. Tell them you are doing a survey and only need one minute of their time. There is no sale involved and you just want to know how valuable that keyword and rank would be to them? Average it out, and there ya go!
