SEO - Method that Really Works

Guys,

Just thought I would post this and maybe it will help some of you out especially if you are new to doing SEO for local clients.

Before you even consider what type of backlinks to build or who to outsource to, you need to check your clients on page SEO. Let me give you an example. But first, let me tell you that while I have done SEO for my own sites for a while now, I only recently started my business helping make the phones ring in my offline business.

I recently picked up a new client. I checked his rankings in Google for about 125 keywords related to his site combined with local cities and neighborhoods. Needless to say, he was not in the top 100 for any of them.

I explained what his problem was. His site was trying to do too many things. He needed to focus on one thing. After talking with him we came up with a plan to focus on one service in one area. Once we ranked there, we could expand to another area. After we covered the local areas, we would repeat the process with another service.

I explained to him that this would not happen over night and would takes months.

Okay, here is the point.

I took his home page and rewrote it. I stuck to all the basic principals of on page SEO.
  • Keyword in title
  • keyword in description twice
  • KW in Keyword tag
  • KW in H1, H2, H3
  • KW bolded, underlined, italics
  • KW in picture ALT tags
  • KW in Picture Title tags
  • I renamed the pictures to his KW
  • KW used as link to authority site (Wikipedia)
  • KW used as link to other pages on his site
  • KW density was 2.33%
This is nothing new. It can be found in almost every SEO WSO out there. They ALL copy each other and this technique, so just do what I listed above and save your $7.

That was it. Took me about 30 minutes. That was last Sauturday. Today is Friday. My client is ranked #2, #5, #7, and #11 for four variations of the keyword. The keyword in moderately competitive.

I started a backlink campaign, but it has not had time to affect this yet. Once the backlinks kick in, I expect to be firmly entrenched in #1 over Google Places.

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys that are just starting know, pay attention to your on page SEO first. You will be amazed at how well it will work.

Jon

Thanks for the reminder about the importance of on page SEO. It can make all the difference especially for local offline clients regardless of the amount of backlinks you create.

That being said, what type of off page SEO did you do for you client? What types of backlinks worked best for you? Thanks!

True - on-page SEO is very important. If you check the competition, many companies have poor on page SEO, they might understand the importance of backlinking but don't know anything about on-page. Any many companies who are getting backlinking done have poor on page SEO - it's really overlooked.

Well all the stuff going around about SEO yadda yadda its still the basics that lay the foundations.

Did you remember to 301 redirect those original image urls to the new ones? Once Google starts finding those and they turn up as 404 errors your going to start going backwards despite your efforts. I ask because you didn't mention it.

Isnt't just deactivating (forget the right term now) those old urls through webmaster better than a redirect?

      I'd like to know?

No, because they are most likely in Google index. Being so the images will appear and if user clicks the image link of the old indexed url they will arrive at a 404 error page so its very important to note all the url changes and 301 redirect them.

Forgot about the image links. The new titles might cause that to happen. Checking right now. Thanks

            Molad,

Yes this would apply to any pages or posts as well to include categories also. They should all be redirected using a 301 redirect.

You can do this very simply if you have a wordpress blog, just search 301 redirect in the add new plugin area and you'll get a list of plugins that do this for you.

I did not change the URLs. I just changed the words on the pages and in the tags. I let the URLs stand.

I am planning to add new pages and not delete the old pages.

I am glad you pointed this out though. I will make sure that any pages I do delete, I redirect.

      Thanks.

crap Im so confused. So you mean even if you delete a page you have to do something to the link, I don't even "get" how to do that if the page is gone ? I have much to learn, I will read up more on this.

Another question, I want to rank my home page for 1 or 2 kw (whatever the case may be) , what I'm getting at is where am I creating new content for other KW ? on the home page too or separate pages (sub-pages ?) that are categories on the home page pointing to those other KW pages/sub-pages ?

      Absolutely right JB!
First thing I ever do when target new keywords is onpage optimization, completing all the components you mention. I do not provide seo services, doing this for my own sites - already 10.
Than starting link building. Always looking for relevant, strong links with as possible higher PR. Than usually making changes on the fly - changing density and so on.
Usually target no more than 3-4 single and 5-8 double and up keywords.
Then doing strong analysis on niche competitors for their links.
      This way receiving great result.
I only target Top 3 in search result, not interested in other positions.

      Hope my experience will help.

      Take care guys.
