Can we force Google to make a Google Places listing via citations?

Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of a dilemma trying to get my first local client. I know I can provide the results I promise, but due to it being a small town: I only have about 1 or 2 hot leads that I can help (the rest are probably doing decently as they're on the first page of Google places).

Anyway. I've had a meeting with one, he didn't follow up with me despite repeated attempts to try and get back at him. I gave him a week initially, then called the receptionist who either did not pass on my friendly reminder or she did but the dentist was not interested.

I did a friendly follow up right away via email as well. No response.

I really want to get this client. He seemed interested in the meeting, but I must have done something wrong via email or whatever for him to not reply.

Anyway, I'm hoping to get my results to near full potential and try and lure him in by showing him the results. Right now, I only have a good website ranking high for a few KW's at the top spot, but no Google Places.

I want to set up a Google Places, but I don't have his permission to send a mailer, as I am not working with him yet.

Can I, if I make a good amount of citations, force Google to make the Google Places listing all by itself?

Does anyone know if this will work? If not, why not? Anyone had any similar experience with this same process?

    I'd say that you can't force Google to do anything but....

    If your prospect has a web site it seems Google should have found it
    by now and maybe created an unverified places page?

    If not, I think you could get Google to create a listing by doing some
    business listings for him. You do so at risk of getting him a places listing
    and then never getting any work from him though.

      Hi Rus,

      Well, I am going after the rent-a-site model if you will. It's not really them renting a website though, as I am more focused on providing a guaranteed minimum X amount of leads per month. I want them to get their moneys worth. Renting out a website that I is not performing but receiving some traffic is not a good way to build a long term business for myself.

      As such, this is the reason I am actually trying to open up the Google Places. To get more traffic --> more callers/leads.

      I would build business listings with a name like "Town Dental" so it is not 'specific' to a business name, but a more 'general' type. I know this is not 'allowed' within Google guidelines, but it seems like the only way for me to move forward in this specific geographical area as I don't the numbers of leads that I would want coming in just yet to easily be able to close a client (I am new to this, so having the leads already coming in at that X amount per month would be HUGE for me to have).

      Also, the phone number in the listing would be a number that I own - and I can set it to re-direct wherever I want. So the goal is just to get a places listing made (ranked high hopefully) and once this is done, leads should now be coming in and my problem of getting a client, should hopefully, be for the most part removed.

      EDIT: So just to make it clear, I am the owner of the said website in that specific town/suburb and I do not yet have a client.

    Hi there mate,

    First off, try not to pester clients... It makes your business look small (which it may be) but your trying to look important. Leave a friendly message saying about the meeting and if the client would like to pursue the matter any further etc but no further.

    Secondly, in the meeting im sure you did nothing wrong. Clients get cold feet all the time and 99% of the time it was nothing to do with you.

    And finally, dont just go looking for opportunities... Make them!

    What i mean by this, is visit shops in and around your local area (Travel a bit further if you have to) and find shops. Go in and ask if they own the shop, and if not ask to speak to the owner. Ask if they have a website, if the answer is no then your in.

    Team up with another local website designer if you cant offer that service, and once the website is designed, its your job to get it high in the listings.

    Bring business cards with you, make yourself look professional, dress smartly. Your first impression means a lot in your business, so dont take that lightly.

    TIP:
    Try finding smaller shops down side streets etc, prepare a short 30 second sales pitch which you can wip out. Remember, these people are busy and they cant afford to sit around and listen to a 30 minute speech most of the time

      Thanks very much for your help. I actually have told myself before not to 'pester' clients and I usually don't bother pestering people. I don't know why I let myself slip this time. Possibly, because I thought I "had" the guy in the meeting and then ended up not "having" him and maybe I panicked to try and get him in on the deal. I know I can provide him HUGE value as he has 0 online presence. I guess it is my fault for not really emphasising the benefits or something, whatever it may be, that turned him off or didn't completely sell him.

      While I do think I did a decent job in the meeting, I am still firmly believing that had I done some things differently, I'd have him calling me back. Oh well, learning experience!!

      I do like your suggestions, but for now I will try to stick with dentists (it is the industry I am trying to learn most so I can effectively get leads for them). Your idea of walking in, no doubt, will get results - but I'm too busy procrastinating to probably do any of that. I have walked in before to drop off envelopes with proposals before, but didn't get a response! Never tried walking in to talk to the owner though. But I guess it would be a lot easier with some industries, compared to the likes of dentists, etc - who usually do a great job at stopping you at the gatekeeper haha!

        Its always annoying when you think you have a client, but then nothing comes of it. Just try and move past it

        Do whatever works for you of course, just some food for thought. If you ever find yourself in need of work, present yourself in person and make them feel special
