That's sort of like asking, "what's the best pizza?"

I like dead pig meat and spice.

Others prefer crap like pineapple and anchovies.

For all of the above, start with Dan Kennedy.

Books/courses - Anything by Dan Kennedy. Jay Abraham is also good...although I'm more of a Kennedy fan.

Dan's Magnetic Marketing course is a must have, in my opinion, for anyone wanting to learn marketing.

Dan's books can be had for like $15 and are worth every penny.

If you tell me what you are looking to do exactly, perhaps I can direct you to a specific book or course.

I would get a hold of any book by Jeffrey Gitomer and Stephan Schiffman. They both write sales oriented books and are both New York Times best sellers, not phony online "guru's".

Not trying to knock online products, because there are some gems out there, but I've found that it is easy to get caught up in buying the latest, greatest thing, and in reality most real books are priced less than even WSO's, and are of a much higher quality. They (the real books) just don't have the professional copywriters writing out a sales pitch for you to buy them.

The above recommendations are great. You'll get a great education from Kennedy, Abraham on direct response marketing.
An excellent advertising book is "Oglivy on Advertising" by David Oglivy - I think it's a must read for anybody before they write or pay for a single ad.
One of the best online resources is Michael Senoff's Unique Selling Proposition Examples | Free Interviews | MP3 Marketing Interviews. The materials are excellent and it's free.

I whole-heartedly agree that Mike's stuff is awesome but I don't see where I can either download or purchase the USP Examples after clicking on the link amongst his long list of links.

When it comes to marketing as a whole, it's really two key parts ...

        1) The marketing strategy: This could be direct mail, yellow pages, 1st page google, advertisement, joint ventures, etc. The master here, IMO, is Jay Abraham.

        2) The marketing piece: This is the creation of the marketing piece. Copywriting. The master here, IMO, is Dan Kennedy.

It's been my experience that you can have the absolutely best marketing strategy for a market place but if the marketing piece is poorly written and doesn't follow copywriting principles, the results will be poor.

In the same respect, you could use a poor marketing strategy, but if you have a killer marketing piece you'll still come out ahead.

My point is, if I was just starting out I'd put my emphasis in copywriting over the marketing strategy. You can make mistakes in the marketing strategy, but there's no room for mistakes in the marketing piece!

If you're into "Marketing" to real people, I advice you to lean Human behavior, different classes, why people buy, etc etc.

Many offliners forget to study this part of the game
