Question about Google places

I've been searching around but can't seem to find an answer to this question. Say I have a business that is located in a suburb of a major city. Would it be possible to rank them in GP for a keyword in that major city?

For example John's Pizza is located in Suburb of Miami, FL. Is it possible to outrank the pizza joints in Miami for the phrase "pizza in Miami"?

Thanks in advance!

Anything is possible, but you have to think about it from the searchers point of view and the businesses point of view.

Google will display the most relevant listings according to several factors and distance is one of them.

But if a pizza place only has a 5 mile delivery range, there is no sense advertising or ranking for areas 20-30 miles away. And Google wouldn't want to show those results anyways. It's bad for all parties involved.

For other businesses where local pick-up or in-office visits are not necassary, you can expand your optimized service areas to allow more distance.

Thanks Greg. I was actually interested in a commercial flooring company so the location isn't a huge issue. However every listing is located inside the city so I was curious. I appreciate you clearing that up for me.

Yeah it will really good to place your business in Google Plus. I also suggest you to submit your business in local business directory.

It is my understanding that you can expand to other areas in Google Places (I have done this to include nearby cities, as I live in a rural area, however you do not show in Google maps only Google Places. Google is changing things everyday so you need to keep up on current changes.
