Email Subject Lines That Works? Newbie Needs Help!

Hi!
I just started my very first business for offline clients. I sell mobile websites and I'm kind of scared to call and meet local businesses face to face.

So I was wondering if anyone can share some email subject lines that works? What script do you use for email marketing?

Would appreciate all the answers I get.

    @jaquelen,

Not to discourage you but if you are going to market to local businesses, then face-to-face meeting is something you shouldn't avoid. It will build relationship with them, and relationships are what matters the most in any business.

Yes, you can use emails, IM, and any other forms of communication methods. But nothing beats a good ol' face-to-face discussion with your client. It will really let you present yourself as a human to your clients, and vice versa. Trust is easier to built this way too.

I can't really give comments on email subject lines and scripts that "works". There is no magic bullet answer to this. It will boil down to your offerings, business model, your clients, their needs, and competition.

I would like to know how you are going to email them about your service. This approach is really tricky cos it can be classified as spam if not done right.

A hint of reality is... your first approaches (maybe 100s of them) will fail. You gotta keep trying, with different email subjects, scripts, offers and so on. Keep testing. Use A/B split testing. And find out what works, and what not. Only then you will find email subject lines and scripts that "works" for you. Don't get discourage by this. Test, keep trying, and improve based on results.

    Hope this helps. Ciao!

Thank you for your answer Sam.

I know that face to face is the best way but it's quite intimidating to me. I'm so afraid that they will be rude and since I'm young I'm afraid that business owners will not take me seriously.

And I live in a really small town so I was thinking of contacting businesses in bigger towns by email before I visit them. I want it to be worth my while and not be a waste of money too.

When you use email marketing, beware of sending emails to people who haven't asked for it - this could be considered spam be the receipients and that's bad for business.
Cold calling is really tough and can be intimidating, however sooner or later you will have to call these people and meet with them face to face - so get yourself ready mentally and prepare well for meetings like that. It's important to have a plan when your meeting with professionals and not waste their time.
A few hints for subject lines: Questions often get more attention than other subjectlines - like: Do you too have problems with xxxxx? (and your product should be able to fix this problem). Also How To.... headlines are often effective.
Remember that in email marketing the only thing that is more important than the subject line is: Who send this to me? and if people don't know you or expect an email from you they'll just delete it no matter how cool your message is.

jaquelen, i agree with Sam. Starting out young has its advantages/disadvantages. What you're experiencing is normal and common. But always, i mean always remember this, to get ahead and grow you must be able to get out of your "comfort zone". You must change your mindset. This will in effect change other aspects of your business and personal life. This is personal development. You may also want to find a mentor to help guide you along. This could be a teacher you admired in school or a friends parent who is successful in business. You can also do what i did to start and go to the local library and read books on sales by reputable people like Brian Tracy, Jeffery Gitomer and Zig Ziglar. Let us know if we can help you in any other way.

    jaquelen,

Sam is absolutely right... you need to get over your fear of face to face if you want to make it long term in this business. Fortunately, it isn't that difficult to do once you've met with people a few times. Like anything, practice makes perfect and you just need to get out there and do it.

It can be intimidating at first, but once you get your first sale, you will see how easy it actually is. You'll then have that fire in you to go out and get more!

    Best of luck!

    Jaquelen,

With email marketing, like advertising, you need to get people's attention, get them to read it and have a compelling offer that makes them want to contact you.

Cold-calling is only tough or intimidating if you believe it is. There are a lot of jobs out there that are tough and intimidating but cold calling is definitely NOT one of them. I used to do it a lot and never got hurt, insulted or attacked. If you walk in with confidence, a smile and an attitude that you are there to help, it's a lot easier.

People are either interested or say no thanks. That's it! If they're interested, great, if not, then make another call. I do understand why you may have fears but, as Ben said, once you have a success, you'll see it's pretty simple.

An excellent resource is OfflineBiz.com. There's a ton of information and free resources about all aspects of selling offline services.

Once you get an account, be sure you have a strategy for generating referrals. The more referrals you get, the less cold calling you will have to do.

Just to get over the fear, have multiple copies of a standard proposal in hand. Walk in to the receptionist and ask to see the purchasing manager. If they ask why, tell them you have a proposal for mobile marketing. Some will let you in, some will just get your proposal. Just make sure to get their number and the contact person's name for follow-up.

Then follow-up. In time, you'll improve this approach and you'll be going up to businesses confidently.

I think I just got my first client But she wanted an app for her business, not a mobile website. She gave me a file with specifikations and I contacted a few app developers on oDesk and asked how much it would cost to do such an app.

Hopefully she will agree with my price

face to face > phone > email.

I've never met any of my top clients though, it's all done on the phone.

You can build trust the usual ways like having a picture of yourself on website, lots of social proof etc.

Face to face meetings with small businesses are usually unproductive in my experience (if you do have one have a clear agenda and hold them to it).

Definitely agree that the most effective way is to bite the bullet and meet face to face ideally. Your ratio of closing deals will be a lot close to 1 !! E-mail marketing does work but it takes a decent amount of trial and error/testing ....and time! Hope you have all the success in your venture.
