Question regarding email marketing for clients

Hi guys,

When you get an offline client who wants you to set up email marketing for them, do you do the email marketing through your account (MailChimp, Aweber, etc)? Or do you get them to register their own account?

Would you advise your client that they need to sign up for an additional service (ie Aweber) before you can commence with the email marketing?

I had my first client who wanted email marketing implemented, and I didnt know what to do, so I advised them to sign up for Aweber, then send me the log in details and I can proceed with the implementation.

Was this the correct route to take? Or was this a rookie mistake?

Thanks guys :-D

Actually, I don't use Aweber, or any paid email list for that matter. I'm a big fan of Facebook and their FanPages.

People today are always weary of their email falling into the wrong hands and e-mail signup/submit forms don't get the type of response that a FanPage Like button gets.

However facebook does offer the ability to direct e-mail all of your fans, as well as segregate that list into multiple demographics.

A well managed campaign can focus Lazer Targeted emails based on 'Gender/age/location (down to city level) and Interests'

Most offline service clients will have targets already planned out for their current sales and offers and the last thing they need is yet another 'Service fee' to have to pay, just to reach all of their prospects.

Thanks for the advice DrPaul, I'll be putting this to use for future clients.

The previous client I had specifically asked for an email marketing solution to be implemented via a service like Aweber/Mail Chimp...

So this leads me back to my original question... Would the correct practice be to ask the client to sign up separately and forward you their login details, or would you host the campaign on your own Aweber/Mail Chimp account?

I always setup my clients with their OWN auto-responder. I never do their email marketing under my account.

So then you are simply charging them a management fee?

If your client won't be doing any of the work (writing the broadcasts, segmenting, etc.) then I suppose you could go either way. If they're going to be doing any of the work then they should have their own account/login. I offer a service where I host all of my clients on my own site. They all have their own page with their capture form where they send people. I limit them to 2 broadcasts a month and have them write their emails and submit it to me on a simple form in my site. I then just copy/paste their letter into their autoresponder. I use Trafficwave.net they offer unlimited lists, responders, campaigns. So I only pay $18 month to provide email services for ALL of my clients.

I ALWAYS use my affiliate link and send them over to a provider that fits their bill..

Generally these are either Aweber or InflusionSoft.

I used to try and play the reseller game, but it got to be a pain in the butt to manage, so I opt for the affiliate commission and let them on their way with paying for it. Then, i get the login details and set stuff up for them.

I also do the same as Bradley. Setup my clients with their own auto-responder.

Bradley / salomeh - so do you direct the client to Aweber/MailChimp, etc, then get there username and password

Or do you set up the account for them and then just charge them a certain % more than what the service is costing you??

You did the right thing JSTEF. You can also put them thru your
affiliate link to continue to get paid when they are billed.

Then work out a consulting deal if they want you to create the
campaigns, write the emails, manage the sends, etc. etc.

Guess I haven't been here for a while and missed the questions.

      @qu4rkd - I have 3 levels of email capture/email marketing.

Level 1 - Setup their email capture form on their website so it's offline business specific which pulls a much higher conversion rate. One-Time Fee.

Level 2 - Add to level one an auto-responder and 1 email to address the optin form. One-Time Fee.

They are on their own with the AR and managing it, or they can pay me a monthly fee to manage it, which doesn't include creating new emails since that's level 3.

Level 3 - Add to level 2 a series of 4 emails to the optin list, plus 2 emails a month. Here they pay an upfront fee plus a month to month fee.

@JSTEF - Depends on the business. If they are internet savvy I'll have them set it up themselves via my affiliate link (always give them your affiliate link) and then they send me their username & password.

Or, if they're uncomfortable doing this, I'll use GoToMeeting and do it for them with them watching and on the phone with me. Then when it gets to their credit card info I make them the presenter and have them enter in that info.

I always set them up on their own auto responder. Both Mail Chimp and aWeber have easy sign ups. Once the client signs up I have them send me their login data.

Like Bradley said....always give them your affiliate link.
