Wordpress Mobile sites...?? Anyone selling them?

So I have been reading all the mobile web site threads and I want to offer these to local businesses. I played around with Warrior Ben's template today and was real easy to customize. However, I have seen some pretty slick wordpress mobile themes, and using the wp mobile toolkit I think we could make some pretty fancy sites for clients.

Is anyone doing this now or is everyone making a basic HTML template? I also feel so many businesses have lousy static html that if I build a wordpress mobile site on my hosting I could go ahead and sell them a normal site redesign using wordpress.

Just wondering all you mobile site sellers out there what you think of the wordpress platforms?

i prefer to use the .php / html templates... keeping it nice and simple just so that it's simple to manage and no need to tinker with WP settings.

Flashy isn't better for mobile sites remember the bandwidth and loading times.
want to make the site as simple to load as possible.

It's not a website its more an information site so K.I.S.S

Although having a cool looking website can be a nice thing to have, according to research done on this subject it still needs to be simple because mobile users look for ease of use when it comes to mobile sites.

According to a mobile survey done by modapt inc. in july 2011, the top three complaints from users were:

      1. Slow downloads 40%
      2. Difficult to navigate 40%
      3. Hard to read/find information 20%

So if you can put together a mobile site that looks good and still fits in with these three categories...bingo!

By the way....here is a site that you can look at that should give you some inspiration.

    That's a cool link!

Aalso you will find most wordpress plugins out of the box don't make the site look like a typical business mobile website with click to call features, Google maps, smartphone/non smartphone compatibility/detection etc absent

Normally the plugins just format a list of blog posts which can be all that's need - i know some people on here swear by WPtouch

I tend to do custom themes/templates from the ground up

fact most mobile generic site builders tend to not validate very well either - whilst looking great, they tend to fall into those three categories listed above...

    1) Slow
    2) Difficult to navigate
    3) Hard to read

Hi Jay, I was reading all that same mobile info here and wondering the same thing.

As an alternative...what do you use?

    Thanks!

Jay has some good points. Someone needs to come out with a killer mobile plugin for businesses, they would absolutely crush it.

Yes they will 'crush it' right here on this forum. As soon as the business owner finds they will just build it themselves or have their admin do it for them. I didn't think we were supposed to devour ourselves.

Using a template and an editor is not that hard, and most anyone on this site can do enough HTML to build a mobile site.

While I like WP and use it exclusively for website, it is to heavy and slow for a mobile site. It's not just wordpress but the shared servers most of run on.

That looks like a great plugin. Wonder if it has restrictions to build a limited number of sites?

Ya i am trying to find a good balance I only want small sites for local business. Warrior Ben's theme has all the features I want, I am thinking UI and graphically some of the WP themes look great. Maybe I just outsource the PSD and then code it myself?

I am totally comfortable codding a mobile site straight up, but I LOVE WORDPRESS. After I learned how to build my own WP theme I fell in love with the paltform now i take slick looking premium themes and make them do what i want. Was thinking I could do the same with wordpress.

BTW i tried the wp mobile toolkit and that's a no go for me. I think I will just look for ways to build on Ben's template.

A bit of a newbie question - if you have a website and a mobile site - are they two separate urls? I mean, if someone goes to JCPenny.com are they redirected to the mobile site if they're on a smart phone - if so how does that redirect work?

I think I'm going to surprise a few people here.

Although i use WordPress almost exclusively for web design, multi site install w/ domain mapping for almost all my sites.

I use Facebook to build mobile sites. Facebook has already mapped out all of the most common devices and display sizes, dynamically re-sizes images, and has built in Social Web 2.0 functions. Facebook displays videos without using flash for iPhone and Blackberry and chances are, the user already knows the interface they are dealing with.

What's more, people trust Facebook pages and with page apps like KevinhDavis's Social Commerce - [SIMPLE FACEBOOK APP] - Creates Killer eCommerce Stores In Minutes... - WSO Of The Day, Today - they can even buy your services or your clients products right INSIDE of Facebook from their mobile device.

The other downsides to using Wordpress for your mobile sites are the time you need to spend installing and customizing all the settings in Wordpress each and everytime, and also the constant updating that needs to take place. Every time a new version of Wordpress is released it doesn't take long before a new bug or security hack has been discovered and it then needs updating. If you are looking after a whole heap of different clients then this is a tedious task having to login and update all these Wordpress installs every so often. You can just leave them be however all it takes is one persons site getting hacked and you are in the sh!t.

I highly recommend keeping it simple with regular html sites.
