The Real Deal Offline Series: Why Sometimes I Don't Like To Do SEO Work For My Clients...

Hey Offliners,

I have a confession to make.

Here it is...

Sometimes, I don't like to do SEO work for my offline clients. In fact, there are times when I try to do everything in my power to discourage my clients from hiring me to do SEO work for them.

Let me explain by giving you an example.

There's a local company that wanted me to get them more customers using the internet. Sounds simple, right? Well, it wasn't simple.

See, they wanted to get people to their website, but they didn't have a website that even came close to converting prospects into buyers. In fact, they said they hadn't gotten an actual customer from their website into their business in years!

So, I wasn't about to risk my $1,000 income stream by messing around with their pathetic, ineffective website.

There's just too many variables that can go terribly wrong with driving qualified traffic to a website that I have no control over.

And I know what you're thinking. Why not upsell them on building a website for them...right?

Because when you start working with real world clients with hundreds and thousands of products, you start to realize that it will take you months to get a website filled with all of the clients products.

Which means, I'd have to spend weeks to build the website with the right framework to support all the products and features, then I'd have to provide the content, graphics, prices etc.

That's too much work for a couple thousand dollars! By the time I would be finished, I'd be working for less than $1 per hour.

So, when I took all that into consideration, I told my client that IF I built them a website, it would take months to finish and then I wouldn't want the job of maintaining it for them.

However, I did have a dozen other ways of driving qualified buyers to their business within the next 7 - 10 days that didn't involve using their website.

It took them a couple of days to warm to the idea, but the eventually took my advice and went with my customer reactivation campaign.

It went extremely well and they made over ten thousand dollars in one week, just using a basic, traditional marketing strategy that didn't involve their website.

Lastly, they did hire another website design firm who is now working on their website and I'm completely happy with that. However, they run all of the design and website stuff by me before they move forward, so I'm still able to keep making money from this client without doing all the grunt work.

Makes sense just do the kind of work you like doing, you don't need every project. Or just quote high enough to make it worth your time, add a buffer on top of what you think it will take.

Custom work in any field is rarely profitable, too many project delays.

    Hey Chris

I like the integrity, and in the long run, they'll stick with you because you make it work.

Are they paying you some kind of consultancy fee to make all this work for them?

    Hey Chris,

I've found that it's best that I strive to be 100% honest with my clients, friends and family members. It keeps my conscience clear and my goals pure.

This client pays me for everything that I do and from time to time also gives me a $500 handshake. They're really a dream client to work with because I took the time to position myself with them.

Now, this client is also an exception because I've worked in this industry for ten years and so I completely understand their business and can really customize my marketing campaigns to work really well for them.
