What Gold Are You Finding In 'View Source'

Hi Everyone

Right clicking on a potential client website and going to 'view source' can reveal a lot about a site. I'm no techie but an insight into the header tags, meta tags, keywords and near the bottom any google analytics can tell us a lot about a company website.

Anyone else got any tips from what they are finding in view source that can give us a selling point?

Just look at the title and headlines and you can see if the site has been done by someone that knew what they were doing or not. e.g. are there keywords, is the headline focused on the customer or just something generic like "Welcome to our website".

A good google search is "Welcome to our + your suburb" or intitle:homepage + your suburb etc

Before you talk to them you might check for GA code, usually it's a pretty good indicator they aren't tracking stats if it's missing. But even if it is installed they usually aren't checking them anyway. So I would never jump to conclusions.

Some SEO and Web design companies leave a link in clients websites footers. A quick google search and you have their client list. Look at the big marketing companies that charge a crap load but don't get any results for clients.

Hey Dan, thanks for adding to the post.

I have come across a lot of sites for a specific industry done by industry web design companies and they have no head tags and would you believe some even have no keywords. Yes have been to these web design companies to check out their testimonials and their clients. Some even had content in their website about seo etc. Maybe these clients that I have been checking have just taken a weblite or basic package?

      Interesting stuff.

You can also use a variety of tools to produce "pretty" ready-to-go reports for business owners. At the very least, the reports will help you pinpoint some areas where the websites are in need of updating/tweaking.

In addition to the points mentioned above about tags, descriptions, etc., I like it when someone has bunch of flash but doesn't understand why they get no traffic. View source reveals there's nothing for the search engines to pick up about the content (same holds for sites that have the copy place on images.

It justifies my pricing points when I show a potential client their website and say: "this is what you see when you view your website".....then I click on view source and say "this is what I see when I view your website". Most have an awkward, shocked look on their faces when I start pointing out their website deficiencies...justifying my worth because they have no clue how to deal with "my view"
