What books do you guys recommend?

What's up? I'm new here, been reading for a while though. I am starting a consulting company.

I've got about 50 snail mails going out with personalized messages. Basically I'm offering a free consultation and my redesign services. I also have a lot of wealthy older friends at the gym who I'm going to talk to (a lot of business owners). I want to explain to them what I'm doing and ask for referrals.

My favorite restaurant just got bought out and it doesn't seem like the new one has a web site. when my business cards come in I'm going to be doing a lot of footwork. My main focus is going to be getting referrals. I might do a few sites for free in the beginning and just collect a maintenance fee.

I'll keep you guys updated on any clients I obtain and how I treat the situation.

Anyways I have a few questions... What books do you guys recommend that pertain to advertising, asking for referrals, consulting, closing, etc. Audiobooks. work too.

And what do you guys use to manage your payments and subscriptions. Paypal isn't an option for me. im US though.

In my opinion a book will never top the quality of information sharing here in this forum.

Also computers will hinder you in that way because there's just too much information when real life experience is all that will really help you sell.

You might check out Daryl Lugulo's stuff on referrals.

Also Dan Kennedy's No B.S. books are excellent.

If I may, let me give you one more tip:

when you send your direct mail offering your free consultation, don't call it a "free consultation."

Give it a snazzy, proprietary name that telegraphs what the biz owner will learn during the meeting and also that it won't take up half his day.

    Example:

    "FREE 21-Minute Website Profits Audit"

That's not great, but you get the idea.

The other thing I would recommend is using 2-step lead generation marketing, where you get the prospect to "raise his hand" and request a FREE Report. In the FREE report, you give out valuable, insider tips and then close with a call-to-action, which is the free consultation.

So you could advertise something like, FREE Report reveals . . . "The 7 Biggest Mistakes Small Business Owners Make With Their Website That Cost Them BIG-Time: Which Ones Are YOU Making Right Now?"

Or whatever. You get the idea.

Doing this will bring you highly qualified, interested prospects.

    Good luck in your endeavors!

This is a must. Amazing book and a life and business changer.

      Also, three oldies but goodies:

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie

And now, for the book I can't believe hasn't been listed here yet: SCIENTIFIC ADVERTISING by Claude Hopkins (yes I am yelling).

David Ogilvy said that anyone involved with advertising in any capacity should read this book at least 7 times!

Jay Abraham has read it at least 70 times, last I heard and this was at least 5 years ago, so it's probably more.

As well, get your hands on anything Dan Kennedy. His books aren't as great, but if you could find some of his seminars or courses, namely High Fee Coaching and Consulting Boot Camp, Renegade Millionaire System, Joint Venture/Back End Seminar, Influential Writing Seminar, and the Lifetime of Secrets Seminar, they will be of unlimited value to you.

Thanks guys I'll be heading to my library shortly.

Thanks for the tips on my direct mail campaign too those are some good ideas. I've got my own twist on it though and I expect a decent response rate. I actually don't even care if I get any clients from the mailing because I know that now that my business website is up and my business cards are on their way I'll be able to network my way into the game. I'm very good at striking up conversation with business owners I just need to prove my competence and professionalism.

I get their credit card number and set up a reoccurring payment in paypal. I NEVER invoice & wait for the check. That puts you into the collections business and totally ruins the dynamics of the relationship.

And don't be fooled into thinking that a great relationship with your client leads to not having to chase money, I've had it happen too many times to count. A great relationship is ok but the only thing that really matters is producing great results for them.

Can you tell me how you do that?

I was under the impression you had to set up a pay button or email link and have them enter the information.

Isn't that one of the selling points of using Paypal, that the buyer doesn't have to expose his CC# to the seller?

I use the Virtual Terminal option in Paypal. It costs about $30/month but it allows me to enter all of the cc information.

I use Quickbooks for my business accounting and am in the process of setting up a merchant account with them. Instead of paying paypal $30/month I'll pay Quickbooks $20/month plus their per transaction fees are less.

Pretty much any book by Dan Kennedy will be well worth your time. I also liked the E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber, Influence by Robert Cialdini and The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris.

Influence, to me, stands out above the rest. It goes deep into the psychology of sales and why people buy.
