Showing clients a finished video...

Well, guys & gals - I believe I've been duped.

I've created a couple videos for some clients - one actually being another marketing company.

I uploaded them to youtube and sent them the link to view the finished product.

Annd... I haven't heard from them since they've received the links.. So, I'm thinking they went ahead and downloaded the videos from youtube considering how easy it is.

Since I'm new to the offline world - I didn't take payment up front to prove myself I suppose.

Now, I've got another company very interested in my services - but, they are on the other side of the country and I'm not sure if asking for money upfront is going to fly.

So, if I could show them a final version of the video in which they couldn't swipe - I don't mind creating the video before payment.

Is there a free site I can upload the video to that they can't download from??

One idea I just had was to watermark it..

Do you guys have any advice on this?

Sorry for the lengthy post!!

Thanks,

James

I think doing a watermark would be your easiest solution. That way if they do steal it, at least it won't be usable.

Maybe put something like "This watermark will be removed once payment is made".

    Just thinking outloud.

Just ask for half up front. Watermark your video. Only put half the resolution online and collect your payment and send them the files. I've done videos for people all over the globe and this works for me.

Even with watermarks, I have had people steal my clients videos and cover the watermark with a graphic or logo. You can't stop a determined thief, but a man who's paid half usually won't steal from you.

Watermark really big with transparency obviously.

Or you can heavily distort the audio which would probably work good also.

Maybe rent out a video using your account so you have total control. The link can still be on their site but if they don't pay the monthly subscription fee (provided they have one) you close it down. Need to check the TOS.

I often have radio stations record ads for my clients, and what they often do is put a loud "beep" tone every 10 seconds, which just ruins the chances of using it on other competing stations. Works well

Watermarking is crucial. Another thing I did was submitting only the first 30 seconds of the videos.

Now regarding the videos you submitted but no reply...You should simply send a final email stating that you respect their choice not to go with your services...but also tell them that they can't use the videos or it will be considered copyright infringement (not a legal advice, consult your a lawyer for this).

I agree about the watermarking. But do not send them the email that you respect their choice not to go with your services... You did the work and deserve to be paid. Don't give in on that. Just send them an invoice. Send it three times with some semi-threatening language similar to collection letters, with the second and third letters referencing the previous one.

You may get paid. You may not. Don't invest too much emotion on getting paid, but try the letters. If you don't get paid, chalk it up as experience and a lesson learned.

As for getting paid up front. Always take something. I always go for half, if not all. You could take a third. If they have a problem with that walk. There's plenty of fish.

I agree just plaster across the video demo version. Once you have been paid just give them the original.
