is it alright to have the city name in my domain (for offline marketing)

by q3rage

I plan on doing some small offline campaigns that involves fliers (and more stuff down the road possibly, i dont like to limit myself)

I was thinking something like xxx-deals (or some sort of variation of those words) where xxx is the name of the city

i've also come across xxxshopper and thexxxshopper.com/net

Just some basic domains. I am thinking of choosing these because their simple and locals can remember them.

wouldn't it be easier to rank them on google?

They dont hurt SEO do they?

      Get on over to Googles AdWords, and run different arrangements.

      Why guess when it can be given to you!

      Here was MY issue...

      Seeber Consulting is my business name. I never did a search, I just *knew* it would be good.

      Truth is, I am now re-branding cause people *actually* search for Computer Services... consulting just isn't an effective or frequently used search term!

      >DOH<

      I think Seeber Computer Service will do much better for my website!

      So, don't be like me... Learn from me! Not everyone needs to suffer >DoH< moments...

      Know what I mean?

      I hope that helps you out.

    Choose a domain that will make people remember of your business / company.
    If the name of your city has no relevance to your business, better leave it. It'll not contribute any good to your business.
    Imagine if your business is a wine cellar, and your city is know for leather goods, surely people will think your city for leather not wines.
    Also think of domain that can be easily memorized, you cannot force your visitors to remember those long words but only you and your competitor will do. Right?
    I hope I help you to figure out something about your concern.

    Thanks,
    MrSS

    By having the City name in your domain you may be pre qualifying prospects from elsewhere that you're unable to service them.

    Why cut your arms off , by all means have a landing page specifically for your city .

    I don't know from SEO point of view but from a customer point of view, having the city name in your domain is fantastic. It creates instant rapport and will convert much better than a less specific name.

    I rank #2 for my "city seo" but i'm thinking of going with another domain name. I get at least half of my clients from out side of my city. no one ever said anything but i want to take over the whole industry and i think "city seo" will stop me from doing it.

    At the end of the day, it really depends on more on your service. I still think "apple" sounds stupid but everyone loves their brand.

    sometimes i learn the harder way but at least i'm learning. =X

    If you're going to do local seo, you MUST have the city name in your clients' domains. If you don't, guys like me who do, will beat you every time. If you're concerned about excluding prospects in nearby cities, get a domain for each of the cities they serve.

    If you don't want to buy a bunch of domains, just be sure to put city names in the url as a category or as part of the page title.

    joeplumber.com/dallas/waterheaterrepair/
    joeplumber.com/plano/waterheaterrepair/
    joeplumber.com/dallas/leakyfaucet/
    joeplumber.com/plano/leakyfaucet/

    If you use a Wordpress SEO plugin, your url will match your H1 and page title... all good things for seo.

    Last tip... buy every $5-$10 WSO report you see here on WF.com with "offline" or "local" in the titles. Way more relevant and actionable than any books you'll find on Amazon.

    Some reference to geography is a must for a Local Marketing company's domain. If city is too limiting, try county, metro, or state...

    suburb = planoseo.com
    county = collincountyseo.com
    nearest major city = dallasseo.com
    metro = dfwseo.com
    state = texasseo.com or northtexasseo.com

    hi tony, I am working for a friends brother who has a biz and I built the site and now doing SEO in a VERY competitve market and niche. I am building town based pages for his main service offering.

    for example: "joetheplumber.com/water-heater-repair-dallas"

    is having a subfolder better like what you have above?

    sorry to semi thread hijack

    My suggestion for you is to select a domain that people will remember easily. You are leading customers to your location. Go ahead and mention it in your domain name.

    having the name in the url is helpful if the city name is specific to the nature of your business -- for instance, if your site is about dallas restaurant coupons, dallasrestaurantcoupons.com would be great because it contains all the keywords customers would search. If it's a directory type site or serves many businesses but is specific to one region, including the region name should help rank the site well.

      I use city + state abbreviation .biz

      My fb page is city + state abbreviation.

      My Google+ page is city + state abbreviation.

      When I created my facebook page, started
      sending local owners friend request they
      were accepted at an high rate.

      My pic is a screen shot of my web site.

      The side effect is that people are complaining
      that my pages sound too official.

      Some people even feel threaten by my presence.

      My first appointment was with the owner of a
      local couponing site and she told me I got a lot
      of local business owners talking.

      My first thought when I registered my domain name
      was that here is a keyword exact match domain name
      for the most searched local keyword in my city / county.

      I like it because people already remember my name and
      have been spelling it for years already.

      I've had no city offiicial contact me as of yet and I dont
      think they will be.

      I get the feeling they feel like they missed a good domain
      name and wish they would have gotten it.
