Offer 1 Service & Over Deliver Do You Agree?

Hey fellow offliners,

Ok after a few weeks have now gone buy I have not gotten as much clients as I hoped due to me taking part in a business course in order to set everything up correctly to comply with VAT and TAX in the UK so now that the course is over its time to start building my business.

As some of you may know I have already gotten a few offline clients creating mobile optimized websites, website design and flyer redesign.

Anyway, while I was on my business course the tutor looked at all the services I wanted to offer which where:

Mobile Website
Website Design
Logo Design
PPC Management
Social Media
Video Marketing
Media Buys
Business Cards
Viral Marketing

The list went on and on about 20+ services.

The tutor gave some advice which was instead of offering all these services at once as I may not be able to complete them all was to pick on service as I first start out and do this one service really well so that it will build my business name and brand.

Do you agree with this and what are your thoughts?

Most of these business type tutors are crap, thats why theyre now in jobs trying to tell other people what to do (wrongly more often than not) instead of still running their businesses
We keep saying the same things on these types of threads and thats because its what works, you have to listen to the business owner , get them talking, add bits here and there to suggest what could be achieved , then pick out whats going to be most beneficial for them in their specific scenario.

If you can truly deliver well on 20+ services then have them to offer, but go with what listening to the business owner talking about their business suggests they really need most

Try not to go in with a shopping list, here mate this is what we offer what one do you want? Instead discover what would benefit them most, deepen the pain if needed by making the situation sound even worse then show them where they could be if they used you to bring them more business via that method (though dont be too specific or exact with the method you'll use just focus on the results youll deliver )

In my offline startup my focus is on social media. This doesn't mean that I don't offer other services. I only have a few clients so far but I predict that social media will work as my foot in the door and I'll have the chance to upsell websites, PPC management or whatever skills I might have to offer them depending on their needs.

Of course don't offer services that you can't complete or so many that you can't do a good job.

I don't like the word 'overdeliver' as much anymore. In project planning it's called 'gold plating' and it's actually frowned upon.

I say give the client exactly what they're looking for and do it on time. One reason gold plating can be bad in digital services is because if you overdeliver in one area but are less than perfect in another, a client might say "If they'd just spent their time on the actual job and not gotten distracted, this would be perfect"

So... I'd say "Meet or exceed expectations" but not "overdeliver" - it may just seem like semantics but they are two very different things.

I can tell you when I started my offline business in 2009, we had one service and one service only. We became the go to guys for this service. We had a USP, a good price that let us make a profit without being the most expensive in the market and we ground out sales, meaning we worked our butt off.

We could not have had the success we had/have by offering all these services at first. Not possible. We expanded our service range pretty quickly, but we started with one thing and we did it very well.

    Meet expectations with flying colors.

You can simplify almost all online services to "online reputation management"

Remember, business owners don't care one bit about what you are doing for "optimization" or "link building" or any of this technical crap. I PROMISE THAT THEY DO NOT CARE.

What they care about is if you are making them money. If you're making them money then they'll give you money, simple. If you can't make them money, then you should just be offering web design services or redesigns.

    Focus.

Plain and simple... Find one thing that you have a great market edge in selling, sell the crap out of it, then expand later.

    You don't want to be a Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none..

Specialists get paid higher because their knowledge is worth more.

You simply must begin with the end in mind..

Where is it that you want your business to go? Once you know this you can then start to build towards it.

Start with the easiest to sell product. What product on your list is the lowest cost or easiest to sell the business owner? This is the product you should start with. Once you become proficient at getting leads and selling this easy service you now have a list of possible customers you can sell a higher level product to.

This is the classic business sales funnel that every company needs. You don't have a business if you don't have a customer list. You can't develop a customer list until you get good at finding and selling leads. Then work your way up to the more complicated projects. It won't be long can you have a thriving business.

I say pick only 3 services max. that you can finish easy and like to do (you should enjoy doing this).Contact those businesses who need your services or need to optimize.
After finishing one service just offer another thing you do for free if they can referral you to another business they bring in.

It's a way to keep things simple, when you have those 3 services under control you can add more and offer them along the way.

Whatever you decide to offer...make sure that you do it really well. Build a strong relationship with your clients and an even better reputation. Meanwhile, continue to educate yourself and expand your services. Your initial encounters will open the door for you in your future endeavors.

Excellent advice from you all thank you for the input, As I have already started I wanted to go back to basics and offer one service and do it really well so that I will be like another warrior said the go to guy in my area for it.

Once I master this one area I will already have built up a customer list and a referral system that I can upsell to.
