Making Cold Calls is Like a Cannibal Chewing on Themselves...

...unless you know what you're doing.

Hey Warriors, I'm putting together a list of rebuttles for those who make cold calls to find offline clients.

I spent 10 years writing scripts for companies like ADT, Verizon and Get Motivated Seminars....so I'd like to offer something to my fellow warriors.

What are the most common/hard to overcome objections you guys run into?

    Seth,
i have a pretty good data base of rebuttals however... I will bite here... as i have others i work with that text me things like this all the time that they deal with...

    Is this Google again?

    I'm Busy

I'm not interested (before you have talked more than 10 seconds)

How much does this cost? ( Before a true Plan of attack is set up)

Just some my people talk about all the time...
    Regards,
    Robert

Sometimes I get this. "We don't need anymore customers" That's from highly competitive fields as well. I don't know if they're just stupid or if they have very bad management. Either way I don't even bother continuing the conversation most times. Perhaps they are just weary of someone promising them more business?

It could be that they're skeptical, but it could also be that they legitimately do not have room for growth right now. Maybe they can't hire more staff or their physical plant isn't big enough or maybe they're getting ready to sell or hand over the business and don't want to deal with new marketing plans. There's lots of reasons why some business don't want more business.

I'm not saying those are the greatest excuses, but I'm just trying to give you some additional insight.

In my immediate area that is the most common BS objection I get. I have ventured out to more sophisticated business people that know how to run a business and want more customers.

        How can I trust you?

Honestly Bob, this isnt a huge financial opportunity for me, Im just trying to get some more work in my portfolio to show case to the rest of the local community here. In other words, $1,000 bucks isnt gonna make or break my business ...If I wanted to look over my shoulder for something, it would be alot more than a thousands dollars (Bob will agree, shake your hand, and chuckle with you here).

I had a man write me a 10k check after I said those words, in my house at my kitchen table... and stick out his hand and said "Thats the answer that put me over".

I get quite a bit of this "We already have a web guy" (or company)

Usually, I call from a list that I have somewhat qualified as not having (or not being able to find) a website or not being listed on Google Places for the main keywords in their field so I know if they are visible or not.

In which case I answer "Really, you have a web guy? Then why are you almost impossible to find in Google?" "What has he been doing?"

It is not foolproof, but it throws the porcupine right back into their lap. Almost any reaction to the question puts the advantage right back to me as it opens up dialogue.

          Good topic for a thread.

This is an interesting one. How many others on this thread have problems with customers trying to make them into "unpaid consultants?"

I over came the "pick my brain for free" problem years ago. I let businesses know upfront that we attack problems that are holding them back from (benefit based upon what I'm selling) ...

        1) My team will fix these problems. After we've established what the problems are we'll put together a proposal, schedule a new appointment and present it to you.

        2) I can be hired as a consultant to teach you and your team how to fix these problems yourself. However, because of the technical nature of what we do most businesses prefer we just handle it all for them.

Of these two approaches, which makes the most sense for your business?

Then, if they try picking my brain I remind them of the consulting option of which I charge $250 per hour. "Should we turn the clock on now?"
